Cougars score seven runs in the ninth, but fall short against Texas State
HOUSTON – The University of Houston baseball team fell to Texas State, 11-10, on Friday night in its series opener at Sanders Field at Schroeder Park.

The Cougars fell to 2-6 on the season, while Texas State improved to 7-3. Houston trailed 11-3 heading into the bottom of the ninth and scored seven runs in the final frame, but could not complete the comeback effort.

The series continues Saturday between the two teams with first pitch set for 6:30 p.m. CT. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. CT.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Texas State's Dalton Shuffield's two-out RBI triple to center field scored two runs to put the Bobcats in front.

3rd | Jaxon Williams added to Texas State's lead with a three-run home run to left field.

5th | The Cougars added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-2. After a double by junior Brett Cain put runners at second and third, redshirt sophomore Ian McMillan's sacrifice fly put UH on the board. Three batters later, freshman pinch hitter Rey Mendoza drew a bases-loaded walk to bring the score to 5-3.

6th | Houston senior shortstop Kobe Hyland recorded his second home run of the season, a solo shot to right field to trim the deficit to 6-3. Freshman Dylan Post added a triple to the right center gap but was left stranded.

7th | Texas State picked up two runs and extended its lead to 8-3. Â

8th | The Bobcats plated three more runs to push their advantage to 11-3.

9th | Houston added seven runs in the ninth, but it would not be enough. Senior Blake Way recorded his second home run of the season, with a two-run blast to left field to cut the deficit down to 11-7. Freshman Luke Almendarez laced a two-out double down the left field to get the tying run to the plate. Post's RBI single brought the Cougars within one run.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• The Cougars were outhit by Texas State, 15-12.
• Junior first baseman Ryan Hernandez finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and one RBI. Hernandez finished with this third multi-hit game of the season. Post added a pair of hits off the bench.
• Almendarez picked up his first career multi-hit game and finished 2-for-5 with an RBI and run scored.
• Junior Stephen Rivas and Cain each doubled for the Cougars, while Hyland each added a one hit apiece. Hyland belted his second home run of the season with a solo blast in the ninth.
• Sophomore designated hitter Derrick Cherry made his first start of the season, logging an RBI single in the ninth.
• Freshman Dax Dathe recorded his first career hit with a pinch-hit single to center field to start the ninth inning.
• Way added his second home run of the year with a two-run blast to left field.

Pitching:
• Senior left-handed pitcher Lael Lockhart Jr. (1-1) suffered the loss, throwing four innings and allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits. The senior struck out four and walked one in his third start of the season.
• Sophomore right-hander Tanner Green threw 2.2 innings, giving up two unearned runs and striking out two. Green surrendered two hits and walked one.
• Junior left-handed pitcher Robert Gasser pitched the final 2.1 innings, surrendering three runs on six hits, while striking out three.
