Houston Remains Perfect at American Championships

Three program records fall on second day of meet
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving team remains perfect after the second day of action at the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships.
DAY 2 – RESULTS
Houston swept the second day of competition earning titles in the 500 Free, 200 Individual Medley, 50 Free, 1-Meter and 200 Freestyle Relay. The Cougars will head into the third day of meet action 388.50 points, trailed by SMU with 279.5 points as Cincinnati sits in third-place with 212 points.
Houston continued to be a steady force in both the pool and on the boards as Zarena Brown defended her title in the 500 Freestyle. Brown came within milliseconds of the program record in the event, finishing at 4:41.89 and shaving over two seconds off of her previous lifetime best. The time is an American Athletic Conference meet record. Samantha Medlin and Monique Rae also advanced to the final. Medlin finish in sixth-place at 4:47.38 and Rae closed out the race in eighth-place at 4:54.13.
Ioanna Sacha earned her first conference title after setting the program record in the 200 Individual Medley. Sacha led the field, touching in at 1:57.23 and was followed by Peyton Kondis in second-place at 1:57.85. Laura Laderoute earned valuable points for the Cougars with a fourth-place finish at 1:58.34, as Kaley Hoffman placed second in the B-Final at 2:01.62.
In the final individual swimming event of the day Mykenzie Leehy set the tone in the prelims of the event, setting a program record in the 50 Free. Leehy clocked a time of 22.42 to advance to the final as the top-seed. In the final, Leehy earned her first individual conference title, clocking in at 22.51. She was trailed by Katie Power who finished second at 22.91, the fifth-fastest time in UH history. Hanna Blewett finished the race in eighth-place at 23.39 as Rachel Hicks earned a second-place finish in the B-Final at 23.24.
On the boards, Lauren Burrell dominated for the second straight day, earning her second conference title and sweeping the springboard events. The senior advanced to the final along with Katie Deininger and Chase Farris, posting a field-leading 289.80 points to earn her third career conference title. Burrell's best dive came on her first attempt when she accumulated 54.00 points after completing a Forward 2 ½ Somersault Tuck Deininger finished in third-place with 280.95 points, as Farris concluded the day in eighth-place with 261.20 points. Jolie Blodgett turned in a first-place finish in the Consolation Final with 262.45 points.
The Cougars closed out the day with their eighth medal of the championships as Brown, Leehy, Laderoute and Power combined for a program record in the 200 Free Relay. The squad touched in at 1:30.51 for first-place in the event.
Championships action will resume on Friday morning at 10 a.m. at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center.
