HUMBLE, Texas – University of Houston junior Andrew Gibson used a busy back nine to lead the Cougars and tie for sixth with a 3-under 69 following the First Round at the All-American Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon at Golf Club of Houston.
Starting the day off No. 10, the Perthshire, Scotland, native began the day with five straight pars before sinking consecutive birdies on Nos. 15-16.
After a bogey on No. 18, Gibson birdied three of his first four holes to start his back nine. He returned to even par with back-to-back double bogeys on Nos. 5-6 but ended the day with three straight birdies to tie for seventh with a 69.
Competing in his first year with the Cougars after transferring from Prairie View A&M, junior Laurence Crea played as an individual on the 7,067-yard, par-72 Tournament Course. Starting his day off No. 10, the Cypress, Texas, native birdied two of his first three holes but gave the strokes back with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 13-14.
Following eight straight pars, Crea (pronounced Cray) drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 3-4. He ended his day with five consecutive pars to finish in a tie for 12th.
As a team, the Cougars finished with a score of 294 to stand in ninth. Sam Houston State held the first-day lead with a score of 11-under 277 to finish one shot in front of No. 8 Wake Forest and Louisiana.
No. 22 Mark Power of Wake Forest fired a 6-under 66 to hold the first-day individual lead and finish one shot ahead of Sam Houston State's Ting-Wei Hsieh and UTSA's Christian Fanfelle.
Senior Matt Cole and junior Luke Long were tied for 22nd at even-par 72. Sophomore Braxton Watkins and senior Logan Young were tied for 31st with 73s, while junior Alexander Frances was tied for 35th at 74.
Making his collegiate debut, freshman Austyn Reily was tied for 64th at 77, while senior Alex Isakson was tied for 72nd at 79. Senior Zach Tracy finished 80th with an 83, while senior Sam Elkington was forced to withdraw from the First Round.

PAIRINGS
For Monday's Second Round, the Cougars will compete in groups with student-athletes from No. 30 South Carolina and Louisiana Tech beginning at 8 a.m.
Reily begins the day off No. 1 at 8 a.m., with Gardner (8:09 a.m.), Frances (8:18 a.m.), Watkins (8:27 a.m.) and Long (8:36 a.m.) following.
On the individuals side, Young begins at 8:45 a.m., off No. 10 with Cole (9:03 a.m.), Gibson (9:12 a.m.), Crea (9:21 a.m.), Isakson (9:30 a.m.) and Tracy and Elkington (9:39 a.m.) following.

UP NEXT
Following the All-American Intercollegiate, the Cougars will play host to the Border Olympics at Max Mandel Golf Course in Laredo, Texas, on Feb. 24-25. Fans should note that that locations was recently changed from Laredo Country Club due to course renovations.
From there, the Cougars will host the Cabo Collegiate (March 1-3) and Valspar Collegiate Invitational (March 16-17).
