Bria Patterson leads Cougars with 13 points
HOUSTON – A team-high 13-point effort, included a perfect 3-of-3 from 3-point range from freshman Bria Patterson was not enough as the Houston Cougars fell to UCF in a 67-49 decision on Wednesday night at the Fertitta Center.
Two Cougars (12-13, 5-6 American) closed out the game in double figures against UCF (13-9, 6-4 American) as Tatyana Hill led the charge on the boards with nine rebounds. Julia Blackshell-Fair led UH in assists for the fifth consecutive game with five.
Dorian Branch provided a much need spark for the Cougar offense, getting going from 3-point range early. The senior scored Houston's second field goal of the contest and first triple of the day with just over two minutes left in the first quarter and finished the game with 10 points. Patterson led UH in scoring for only the second time this season, coming within one 3-pointer of matching her career-high in the category.
Houston's defense rattled the Knights, forcing 22 turnovers as the Cougars managed to keep things close early. Hot shooting and second-chance points eventually widened the UCF lead as the Knights outrebounded Houston 42-32, outscoring the home team 17-9 in second chance points. Offensively, UH finished the game shooting 33.9 percent from the field. The Cougars held UCF to 25.0 percent shooting from three-point range.
UCF's Kay Kay Wright led all scorers with 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting.
The Cougars will return to action on Feb. 15 when the team travels to Philadelphia for an American Athletic Conference match-up with Temple.
