Cougars close out stellar day of action at Red Raider Invitational
HOUSTON – A program record and a trio of top-five times in the nation highlighted a stellar afternoon of track & field action at the Red Raider Invitational on the campus of Texas Tech University.
RUNNING EVENTS
Allen Blair got things going on the men's side for Houston, running a collegiate-best 21.87 to win his heat of the 'B' 200-meter race, finishing 17th-overall in the event. On the women's side, Essance Sample turned in a fifth-place finish in the women's 'B' 200-meter race at 24.43.
Terence Ware and Travis Collins advanced to the final of the 60-meter with third and fourth-place finishes at 6.724 and 6.726, respectively. In the final, Collins would prevail with a second-place finish at 6.65, followed by Ware at 6.69.
Naomi Taylor continues to remain among the top-5 in the nation after advancing to the final of the 60-meter hurdles with a first-place finish in the prelims at 8.14. In the final the junior notched a second-place finish at 8.21. Both times, broke the facility record in the event. Dayo Akindele shattered the facility record in the 60-meter hurdles that was previously held by Houston alum Amere Lattin, matching his collegiate-best time of 7.78 in the prelims for first-place.
The 200-meter would feature the fifth-fastest time by a collegian this season, as Brianne Bethel clocked a time of 23.53 for first-place in the event.
The Houston 4x400-meter relay squads would close out the meet on high-note with top-two finishes. Aliyah Taylor, Taylor Bennett, Cecilia Tamayo-Garza and Bethel would combine for a time of 3:38.25 in the event. The time would break the previous meet record in the event and ranked 10th nationally. On the men's side Jermaine Holt, Quivell Jordan, Frederick Lewis III and Tyrell Valentine notched a time of 3:08.45 for first-place in the event and the third-fastest time in the nation this season.
FIELD EVENTS
Taylor Scaife got things going in the field for the Cougars, as the senior in her first outing post-injury won the women's weight throw. Scaife posted a mark of 20.18m (66-2.5) on her first attempt to win the event and was followed by Mikaila Martin in second-place with a throw of 19.33m (63-5).
In the men's weight throw, Miles Marhofer shattered the program record in the event for the second time this season. The junior posted a collegiate-best mark of 20.85m (68-5) for third-place in the event.
Nora Monie once again showed her strength in the shot put, earning a second-place finish with a throw of 16.11m (52-10.25). The mark currently ranked 16th among collegians nationally.
Both Jadon Brome 15.27m (50-1.25) and Quinton Stringfellow 15.20m (49-10.5) set new collegiate-best in the triple jump as Brome finished in fourth-place and Stringfellow placed sixth.
Antonio Ruiz bested his previous collegiate-best in the pole vault, clearing 5.35m (17-6.5) for third-place.
Brendon Rivera posted a podium finish in the high jump as one of the final three competitors, clearing 2.08m (6-9.75).
