HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston got out to a strong start, taking control early by way of strong rebounding. Tatyana Hill snagged five early rebounds, including two which resulted in points. Dymond Gladney got going from deep, sinking a pair of three-pointers that opened up an eight-point lead for the Cougars with less than three minutes to play in the frame. Houston headed into the break, leading ECU 14-12.
The Cougars struggled offensively in the second quarter, as ECU turned up the pressure on both ends of the court. A 7-1 run at the midway point of the frame helped the Pirates tie things up as both teams battled down the stretch. ECU ultimately took a three-point advantage at the break, heading into the locker room with a 31-28 lead.
Houston took control of the paint for much of the third quarter, outscoring ECU 16-12 in the paint and 7-2 in second-chance points. The Cougars hit six of their last seven shots down the stretch as Hill anchored the Houston front court. Bria Patterson came alive late, sparking the Cougar offense with a series of offensive boards that swung the momentum in favor of the home team. UH headed into the final 10 minutes of play, leading ECU 52-48.
Hill came out of the break swinging, scoring on back-to-back possessions to force an early ECU timeout. The Cougar defense held ECU without a field goal for the opening four minutes of play of the fourth quarter. Another basket from Hill, paired with a timely three-pointers from Branch and Patterson would keep ECU at arm's length. Houston closed out the game strong on the defensive end and wrapped up a 72-63 win over ECU.
