Cougars face SMU at 8 p.m., Wednesday, in American Athletic Conference action
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Men's Basketball program returns to the Fertitta Center this week when it plays host to SMU at 8 p.m., Wednesday in American Athletic Conference action.
The Cougars (12-4 • 2-1 American) enter the first of two games this week following a tough 63-61 loss at Tulsa on Saturday afternoon.
Against the Golden Hurricane, redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills led all players with 22 points for his second straight 20-point game. The Arden, N.C., native ranks second among the Cougars with 12.9 points per game and is tied for 19th in The American. He was named to The American Honor Roll on Monday for his impressive performances.
Sophomore guard Quentin Grimes leads the Cougars with 13.5 points per game, while sophomore guard Nate Hinton is nearly averaging a season double-double with 11.9 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Senior center Chris Harris Jr. leads the Cougars and ranks second in the league with 2.3 blocked shots per game.
Wednesday's game will be the Cougars' first action in their home facility since a 78-63 win over UCF to open The American play on Jan. 3. Houston has posted a 21-3 record inside the $60-million Fertitta Center during the building's young history with a 6-2 mark in 2019-20.
However, that level of play in front of the hometown fans has been nothing new for the Cougars. Since 2015-16, the Cougars have posted a 67-11 record in Houston while competing in three different venues. Those numbers include a 21-3 record in the Fertitta Center, a 19-1 mark in Texas Southern's H&PE Arena and a 27-7 mark in Hofheinz Pavilion.
#FIGHT4LITERACY
Once again, Head Coach Kelvin Sampson and the Cougars will team up with Coaching for Literacy to promote childhood readying and raise funds for the local literacy work of Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation.
In support of childhood literacy, Sampson and his staff will wear green lapel pins and wristbands on the sidelines of Wednesday's game.
For every $10 contributed by Houston fans, Coaching for Literacy will provide two books to local school children. To learn more, fans should text COUGARS4LIT to 71-777 or visit http://igfn.us/vf/COUGARS4LIT.
Thanks to the support of its partners and Americans nationwide, Coaching for Literacy has conducted over 125 #Fight4Literacy Games with more than 50 NCAA teams. Their work generates crucial awareness and has provided over $280,000 to fund over 85 literacy projects supporting more than 15,000 children nationwide. The mission of Coaching for Literacy is to use the power of sports to raise awareness about the problem of illiteracy and generate financial support for literacy programs nationwide.
