Junior forward secures second double-double of season
HOUSTON – University of Houston junior forward Fabian White Jr. posted 17 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season to lead the Cougars to a 71-62 win over SMU inside Fertitta Center on Thursday night.
White, who is one of only two two-year lettermen on the roster, connected on 6-of-12 shots from the field and grabbed six offensive boards with an assist and steal to lead the Cougars to their sixth win in the last seven games.
With the win, Houston improved to 13-4 overall and joined No. 16/16 Wichita State, Cincinnati and Tulsa in a tie for the American Athletic Conference lead at 3-1. SMU fell to 12-4 overall and 2-2 in league play.
The two teams went back and forth early before SMU pulled to within 18-17 following Emanuel Bandoumel's jumper with 9:20 remaining in the first half.
Fortunately, the Cougars closed the half on a 13-3 run to take a 31-20 lead into the locker room at the break. Sophomore guard Quentin Grimes ignited the rally with its first five points.
In the second half, SMU trimmed the deficit and moved to within four points or closer on multiple occasions, but the Cougars responded each time.
After Isiaha Mike's 3-pointer with 2:36 left moved SMU to within 63-58, the Cougars scored six of the game's next eight points – all from the free throw line – to seal the victory.
Redshirt freshman guard Caleb Mills totaled 15 points, while sophomore guard Nate Hinton finished with 14 points and nine rebounds with a pair of steals. Junior guard DeJon Jarreau added nine points with eight rebounds and a pair of assists to lead the Cougars.
SMU guard Kendric Davis led all players with 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Forward Feron Hunt totaled 14 points, while guard Tyson Jolly led the Mustangs with eight rebounds.
