Houston Sweeps Team Titles at McNeese

Cougars post 10 top-10 finishes en route to team titles
LAKE CHARLES, La. – For the first time since the 2015 season the University of Houston Cross Country team posted 10 top-15 finishes and clinched both the men's and women's team titles at the Lake Charles Toyota Stampede on Saturday morning at the Derbonne Multisports Complex.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Entering the competition sitting at No. 4 in the South Central region and two weeks removed from a team title at the Rice Invitational, the women's squad posted five top-15 finishes to clinch its second team title of the season.
Freshman miler Darby Gauntt led the squad with a fourth-place finish after clocking a time of 18:01.6. This marks Gauntt's second top-10 finish of the season and second of her career. Meredith Sorensen secured a sixth-place finish with a time of 18.18.3 for her second top-10 finish of the season, followed by Jahnavi Schneider in seventh-place at 18:29.0. Madeline Castleberry notched her highest finish of the season with a time of 19:02.0 for 13th-place and was trailed by sophomore Regan Lobodzinski in 14th-place at 19:04.4 to round out the top-15 for the Cougars.
On the men's side, Houston accumulated five top-15 finishes led by Jemal Wote who crossed the finish line at 20:07.4 for fourth-place. Veteran mile G.J. Reyna closed out the race in eighth-place with a time of 20:24.4, followed by Devin Vallejo-Bannister in ninth-place at 20:27.3. Gabriel Armijo clocked a time of 20:35.0 for 12th-place and was trailed by Alan Elbanna in 13th-place with a time of 20:39.3 to round out the top-15 for the Cougars.
UP NEXT
Houston will head to California for the Santa Clara Invite on Oct. 19 for one last test before the 2019 American Athletic Conference Championships on Nov. 1.
