Cougars ready to travel to Bahamas and seven states
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Women's Golf program will compete in seven states as well as its first trip to the Bahamas during the 2019-20 season, Head Coach Gerrod Chadwell announced Thursday.
Houston, which captured the American Athletic Conference Championships title for the third time in the last four seasons a year ago, will play in four tournaments during the fall season with five events in the spring before heading into the postseason.
The Cougars will tee off in Texas, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arizona, Alabama and Florida with a trip to the Bahamas for the first time in program history in late October. Houston will host the White Sands Invitational on Oct. 28-30 at Ocean Club in Nassau, Bahamas.
"This was an opportunity I jumped right on when it became available. I love the Bahamas, and I love their people," Chadwell said. "Our players are going to love this experience. It will be like nothing they have ever seen. This will be one of the coolest events in college golf."
Senior Amanda Elich and sophomores Hannah Screen and Maria Jose Martinez return to lead a Houston squad, which features four newcomers. Screen and Martinez each earned All-American Athletic Conference honors a year ago, while Elich will be the Cougars' lone three-year letterwinner.
Senior Brooke McDougald (TCU), junior Ariana Saenz (Texas A&M), sophomore Annie Kim (Vanderbilt) and freshman Karen Fredgaard (Asserbo, Denmark) will don the Scarlet & White for the first time in 2019-20.
"We lost a lot with four seniors from a year ago, but (Assistant Coach) Lydia (Gumm) and I have a lot of excitement for this team coming back. We have a three-year letterman, and two All-Conference players returning, and we are gaining a lot of experience with three transfers," Chadwell said. "As happy as I am with the golf talent on our team this season, I am even more happy with our team as people. Our team chemistry will be as good or even better than it has ever been."

FALL SEASON
Houston begins the fall campaign on Sept 20-22 at the Mason Rudolph Championship in Franklin, Tenn., with a trip to the Schooner Fall Classic in Norman, Okla., on Sept. 27-29.
The Cougars compete at the Jim West Challenge on Oct. 20-21 in San Marcos, Texas, before leaving the country.
For the first time in school history, Houston will play host to the White Sands Invitational at the Ocean Club in Nassau, Bahamas.
