Cougar schedule highlighted by seven home games
HOUSTON – University of Houston soccer head coach Diego Bocanegra unveiled the 2019 schedule on Thursday, which features seven matches at the Carl Lewis Complex.
"The 2019 season can't start soon enough." said Bocanegra. "Since the end of the spring semester, the players and staff have all been counting the days until we all get to be back together as a team. This past spring we were challenged in multiple ways on and off the field. Through it all we grew together as a family and it showed by our results in the classroom and on the field. I have no doubt that we will take that momentum and carry it into the fall."
"We have a challenging but exciting schedule which will take us across the country from California to Connecticut and many more stops in between. We will play teams from 5 different conferences including the Pac 12 and the Big 12. We do all of this to prepare us for the always challenging gauntlet that is the American Athletic Conference."
Following an exhibition match against Houston Baptist (Aug. 11), Houston will kick off the 2019 slate at Sam Houston State on Aug. 22 and Rice on Aug. 25. This marks the second consecutive season that the Cougars will start their season on the road.
Houston will return home when it takes on Incarnate Word on Aug. 30 and Cal State Northridge on Sep. 1, before heading to the Golden State to face a pair of Big West opponents in Cal State Fullerton on Sep. 6 and UC Riverside on Sep. 8 at Fullerton.
The Cougars will make a brief return to the Carl Lewis Complex to host Oregon State on Sep. 12. Houston closes out non-conference play when it hits the road for a three-game stretch to take on Stephen F. Austin on Sep 15, Oklahoma on Sep. 22, and Northern Arizona on Sep. 27.
Houston will open October and American Athletic Conference play at home when it faces USF on Oct. 3 followed by UCF on Oct. 6. The cougars will then head East when the team goes head to head with UConn on Oct. 10 and Temple on Oct. 13.
On Oct. 17 Houston will return to the Carl Lewis Complex for its final two home games when it first takes on ECU, followed by Cincinnati on Oct. 20.
Rounding out the regular season with another three-game stretch on the road, the Cougars will take on 2018 American Athletic Conference Champion Memphis on Oct. 24, Tulsa on Oct. 27 and SMU on Oct. 31.
Postseason play begins on Nov. 3 with the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Championship. The semifinals be held on Nov. 7 with the conference championship match on Nov. 10.
