Houston Punches Six Tickets on Final Day of Prelims

Cougar’s send women’s 4x100-meter relay to NCAA’s for first time since 2015
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Houston Cougars Track & Field program closed out the final day of the NCAA West Prelims with six punched tickets to the NCAA Championships, to send 10 individuals and two relay squads to the NCAA Championships in Austin, Texas.

HOW IT HAPPENED ON THE MEN'S SIDE
Â
Having already punched a ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 400-meter hurdles, Amere Lattin continues to be a dominating force for the Cougars, punching his second ticket of the weekend to Austin in the 110-meter hurdles. The senior matched his season-best of 13.56 in the quarterfinals of the event, finishing first in his heat and first overall.

In the 200-meter dash, Kahmari Montgomery posted the fourth-fastest time in program history at 20.35 to finish in second-place in his heat and fourth-place overall. Kahmari has now qualified for both the 400-meter and the 200-meter dash at the NCAA Championships.

Joining Montgomery will be Mario Burke who closed out his heat of the 200-meter dash in third-place at 20.58. Burke will head to Austin to compete in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash.

In the final event of the weekend, the Houston men's team closed out the 4x400-meter relay in fourth-place overall and first-place in its heat at 3:03.32 to advance to the NCAA Championships. Obi Igbokwe ran a 45.03 anchor leg to propel the Cougars to their first-place finish in the third heat and the third-fastest time in program history.

Felipe Valencia closed out his decorated career at Houston on Sunday with a 26th-place finish in the shot-put with a toss of 60-3 (18.36). Valencia will leave Houston as a three-time NCAA West Region Qualifier, two-time American Athletic Conference Indoor Champion in the shot put, 2019 American Athletic Conference Outdoor Champion in the shot put and five-time American Athletic Conference medalist in the shot put.

Triston Gibbons concluded the meet with a personal best toss of 58-2 (17.73) in the shot put and a 37th-place finish.

The Houston women's team had a stellar final day of action in Sacramento. Naomi Taylor, Essance Sample, Samiyah Samuels and Ashley Seymour combined for a season-best 43.93 in the 4x100-meter relay to qualify for the NCAA Championships. The squad will represent the Cougars at the NCAA Championships in the 4x100-meter relay on the women's side, becoming the first squad to do so since the 2015 season.

Taylor stayed busy, running a time of 13.23 and finishing second in her heat and punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in the 110-meter hurdles.

Falling just short of punching her second ticket of the weekend to the NCAA Championships, freshman Ashley Seymour concluded the 200-meter dash with a personal best time of 23.51 and 21st overall.
