
Houston Overcomes Rice in Extras to Even Silver Glove Series

Cougars score six runs in top of the 10th inning
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team picked up an 8-2, 10-inning win over Rice on Wednesday night at Reckling Park.
With the decision, the Cougars even the Silver Glove Series, 1-1, and improve to 27-18 on the season, while the Owls fall to 21-24 overall.
KEY INNINGS
1st | Rice scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead.
8th | The Cougars tied the game with two runs in the top of the eighth. With one out, junior shortstop Kobe Hyland walked and sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace singled to right center. Following a strikeout and wild pitch that moved the pair to second and third base, respectively, junior third baseman Jared Triolo hit a base-clearing double down the right-field line.
10th | Houston capitalized on six walks and four wild pitches to score six runs with two outs in the top of the 10th. With one out, sophomore right fielder Drew Minter walked. Following a flyout, freshman second Brad Burckel also walked and two wild pitches had the pair in scoring position. Senior first baseman Joe Davis drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Freshman designated hitter Derrick Cherry plated Minter with a walk. A hit by pitch to junior left fielder Tyler Bielamowicz and walk to freshman center fielder Johnathon Thomas yielded two more runs to force a pitching change. Back-to-back wild pitchers from Owl arm Benjamin Content delivered two more runs, before Hyland capped the scoring with a single to right field for the 8-2 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Triolo's two-out, two-RBI double highlighted a 1-for-5 effort with a walk.
• Lovelace singled twice and scored once in a 2-for-4 effort. He also drew a walk.
• Middle infielders Burkel and Hyland each singled in in 1-for-4 displays. Hyland's RBI single capped Houston's six-run 10th inning.
• Bielamowicz (HBP), Cherry (walk) and Thomas (walk) all recorded RBI free passes.
• Bielamowicz, Burckel, Cherry, Davis, Hyland, Lovelace, Minter and Thomas all crossed home plate in the win.
Pitching:
• Junior right-hander Devon Roedahl (7-2) picked up his American-Athletic-Conference-leading seventh win of the season, with all victories coming out of the bullpen. Roedahl tossed the final two and two-third innings, issuing just one hit and one walk while recording four strikeouts.
• Junior Brayson Hurdsman was taxed for two runs in the bottom of the first.
• Senior Nolan Bond came on in the second inning and tossed two and two-third scoreless frames with two walks and two strikeouts.
• Junior Sean Bretz took over with runners at the corners in the fourth. After getting a groundout to end the inning, Bretz retired the side in the fifth and faced one over the minimum in the sixth.
•  Junior Fred Villarreal came on to start the bottom of the seventh and recorded four outs before being relieved by Roedahl in the eighth.
The Cougars, who are playing nine straight games in the Houston area, return to Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park for seven straight games. Houston will host UNLV (May 3-5), FAU (May 8) and Tulane (May 10-12) at home before facing Rice in the Silver Glove Series finale on May 14 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land, Texas.

Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
