Cougars score twice in first inning; Lael Lockhart Jr. goes seven-plus scoreless in win

HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team shutout UNLV, 2-0, on Saturday night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 28-18 on the season, while the Rebels fall to 25-22 overall.

KEY INNING
1st | Houston scored the lone two runs of the game in the bottom of first inning. With one out, freshman second baseman Brad Burckel became the first base runner of the game with a walk. Burckel stole second base and move up to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Senior first baseman Joe Davis was intentionally walked to put runners at the corners. The Cougars then traded an out for a run on a fielder's choice of the bat of freshman Derrick Cherry. Junior right fielder Tyler Bielamowicz followed with an infield single. With runners back at the corners, senior left fielder Rey Fuentes III plated Cherry with a single up the middle for what would prove to be the 2-0 final.

HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Bielamowicz went 2-for-2 with two singles and a walk.
• Burckel was 1-for-3 with a single, walk, run scored and stolen base.
• Fuentes III's RBI single in the first inning highlighted a 1-for-3 effort.
• Senior outfielder Grayson Padgett also singled and walked in a 1-for-3 display.
• Cherry recorded an RBI and run scored.

Pitching:
• Junior southpaw Lael Lockhart Jr. (4-5) was lights out in his fourth win of the season. The native of Friendswood, Texas, tied his career high with seven and two-thirds innings pitched. Lockhart Jr. scattered five his and two walks while recording five strikeouts.
• Junior Devon Roedahl tossed the final inning and a third to record his fourth save of the season. Roedahl walked one and struck out three in seven batters faced.

ON DECK
The Cougars go for the series win in a 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday.

PARKING IN 2019
Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
