Cougars travel to Memphis for conference series
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team is set for a seven-game road trip, beginning with a three-game series against the Memphis Tigers from Thursday to Saturday.
Â
Houston enters this weekend with a 29-15 record and a 6-6 mark in American Athletic Conference play, after winning all three games against UConn last weekend. The Cougars are on a four-game conference winning streak and seek to sweep back-to-back series for the first time since the 2011 season.
Â
With Houston holding a 33-10 all-time lead over Memphis, the Cougars look to continue their historical trend of success against the Tigers, having won the past five matchups. The last time the Cougars squared up with the Tigers in Memphis was in 2017, when the Cougars took the season series 2-1 after coming out on top of the rubber match by a score of 8-2.

Last Time Out
After falling to No. 11/11 Texas in Austin to open the week, Houston bounced back swiftly to win three straight at home against UConn for the Cougars first series sweep of the season.
Â
Houston opened the weekend series with an offensive explosion, as the Cougars put 12 hits on the scoreboard, resulting in a run-ruling of the Huskies in the 9-0 decision. That contest also saw the Cougars tie a program record with seven stolen bases in the game, along with Tierrah Williams blasting a pair of home runs and tying her career-high with five RBIs.
Â
Game two of the series found Maya Thomas and Arielle James combine to go 6-for-7, while Savannah Heebner tossed her 16th complete game of the season, retiring 16-straight batters at one point.
Â
In the series finale, Rachel Hertenberger collected the first conference victory of her career, finishing the game with a career-high seven innings pitched. The 2-1 win also marked the first time in her career that she didn't allow a walk in a start.
Â
Hit 'Em Fast, Hit 'Em Hard
Not only has the Houston offense come out firing this season, but the Cougars have pounded their opponents in the opening innings. Heading into this weekend, the Cougars are outscoring their opposition 64-21 in the first two innings.
Â
The opening frame for Houston has proven to be a valuable one for the team, as the Cougars are 13-1 on the year when they score in the first inning. Overall, the Cougars are 22-3 when scoring first.
Â
The Best of the Best
On April 15, Savannah Heebner was selected to the National Pro Fastpitch (NPF), as she was drafted by the Chicago Bandits with the 24th overall pick in the fifth round. Heebner became the seventh player in program history to be drafted to the NPF and first since Haley Outon in 2014.
Â
Prior to the start of the season, Heebner earned herself a spot on the Top 50 Watch List for the 2019 USA Softball Player of the Year award, which was announced by USA Softball. She was the only player from the American Athletic Conference named to the list.
Â
Heebner was also named to Justin's World of Softball 2019 Preseason All-America list as member of the Second Team. In 2018, the Sedalia, Colo., native led The American in wins (26), opponent batting average (.204) and a minuscule ERA of 1.15 in route to receiving Co-The American Pitcher of the Years honors, as well as a Second Team NFCA All-America nod.
