Cougars back home for five games
HOUSTON – Following its 10-game road trip, the University of Houston Softball team returns to Cougar Softball Stadium to host McNeese Wednesday for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
Having won 19 of its past 23 games, the Cougars enter the matchup with the Cowgirls holding a 23-9 record and a 2-1 mark in American Athletic Conference play, while McNeese is 15-18 on the year and 6-3 in the Southland.
Wednesday's matchup with McNeese completes a home-and-home series with the Cowgirls. Earlier in the season, Houston traveled to Lake Charles, La., and stormed back to complete a comeback victory over McNeese. Trailing by a run in the top of the seventh, the Cougars posted a six-run inning, which proved to be the difference in the 7-2 victory.
vs. McNeese
Houston put together another successful week, posting a 4-1 record on the road, with two wins over --/RV Baylor and taking the conference-opening series from Wichita State, 2-1.
The Cougars began the week entering a hostile environment in Waco, Texas, and walked away with a pair of midweek wins over the Lady Bears. Houston opened the day with a 2-0 shutout victory and followed that with a 6-1 win over the Lady Bears.
On the day, senior outfielder Sarah Barker went 3-for-7 with a pair of runs scored and a run batted in. Junior infielder Sarah Queen drove in three runs in game two with her two-out double in the fourth. With a run scored in the bottom of the fifth in the second game, junior pitcher Trystan Melancon had her scoreless inning streak ended at 21 innings.
After its trip to Waco, Houston rounded out its 10-game road trip opening up American Athletic Conference play at Wichita State, where the Cougars took the series from the Shockers, 2-1. The weekend saw another standout performance from Barker, that resulted in her earning a spot on The American Weekly Honor Roll for the second time this year.
Despite falling in the game one of the series, the Cougars showed their resilience in game two, even though they were down in the top of the seventh. With her team trailing by a run, senior infielder Rachel Hill, stepped up to the plate and plated home a pair of runs with her two-RBI single to help lift Houston to the 5-4 victory.
In the rubber match of the series, Barker went 2-for-2 in the contest with three runs scored, three RBIs and a home run. She was joined by senior first baseman Savannah Heebner as those with multiple hits for the Cougars in the contest.
Hit 'Em Fast, Hit 'Em Hard
Not only has the Houston offense come out firing in its games, the Cougars have pounded their opponents in the opening innings. Heading into the contest with the Cowgirls, the Cougars are outscoring the opposition 51-14 in the first two innings.
The opening frame for Houston has proven to be valuable for the team, as the Cougars are 10-0 on the year when they score in the first inning, which includes a .298 batting average. Overall, the Cougars are 18-2 when scoring first.
