Houston Drops Road Contest to No. 2 UConn

STORRS, Conn. –The Houston Cougars Women's basketball team dropped its final regular-season road contest in a 83-61 decision to No. 2 UConn on Saturday afternoon at the Gampel Pavilion.
Houston came out strong with a trifecta of three-pointers from Octavia Barnes, one from Dorian Branch and one from Angela Harris to take an early 17-7 lead over No. 2 UConn. The Huskies would climb out of the hole, using a 6-0 run to trail 17-15 at the midway point in the quarter. UConn would chip away, scoring in the paint, but timely baskets from Julia Blackshell-Fair and Branch would give Houston a 23-22 lead at the end of the frame.
Houston would come out strong in the second frame, but UConn would continue to trouble the Cougars in transition. UConn would embark on a 12-0 run to take a 34-27 lead at the midway points of the quarter. A timely three-pointer from Harris would get the Cougars within six-points as Houston continued to put pressure on the Huskie offense. Houston would head into the break outrebounding UConn 21-15, including 8-2 in offensive boards, and trailing 40-30.
Houston would come out with an emphasis on defense in the third quarter, picking up a few early fouls to send UConn to the line. Serithia Hawkins would find open space and knock down a three-pointer, followed by Harris with her second of the day to get within seven. UConn would attempt 17 free throws heading into the halfway point of the period to take a 55-41 lead. Harris would hit her third shot from long-range to put Houston within 10 points. UConn would tack on points, extending its lead to 62-45 heading into the fourth quarter.
UConn would hit 6-of-7 shots to open the frame, widening its lead to 81-55 with less than two minutes remaining. Another made three from Branch and Barnes would close out the contest, as the Cougars fell to UConn in a 83-61 decision.

HOUSTON: The Cougars saw three players reach double figures in scoring, Barnes, Branch and Harris each dropped 14 points. Hawkins led the team in rebounds with eight, as well as assists with five. Barnes has now hit at least one three-pointer in the last 18 games.
UCONN: UConn finished the game with four players in double figures led by Napheesa Collier with 29 points. Collier and Megan Walker led the Huskies on the boards with nine rebounds each and Dangerfield finished with eight assists.

Houston will return home to face UCF and honor its three seniors in a pregame ceremony on Monday March 4 at the Fertitta Center. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.

- Houston drops to 15-13 on the season and 9-6 in conference play. A USF loss earlier in the day clinched a first-round by for the Cougars in the 2019 American Athletic Conference tournament.
- The Cougars shot 33.9 percent from the field, compared to 52.7 percent from UConn. The Cougars grabbed 14 offensive rebounds compared to 10 from UConn,as well as posting 14 points off the bench compared to five from the Huskies.
