Cougars will compete in midweek doubleheader
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team continues its 10-game road swing with a midweek doubleheader at RV/-- Baylor on Tuesday, March 19. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m., while the second game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Despite Baylor holding the all-time series lead, the battle between the Cougars and Lady Bears has been neck-and-neck as of late, with each side winning two games in the past four meetings. The run differential amongst the two squads during that four-game stretch has shown just how close the two sides are, as Baylor has outscored Houston by just a single run (13-12).

The Cougars began their first road trip of the season with a six-day swing in Southern California, where Houston participated in the Highlander Classic and a midweek contest with Cal State Fullerton. Houston finished the trip 3-2, posting a microscopic ERA of 0.78, having allowed four earned runs in the five games.
Offensively, senior outfielder Sarah Barker recorded her best stint of the season, batting a team-best .462 on the road trip, while also leading the team with her .563 on base percentage. As a result of her performances at the Highlander Classic, she earned a spot on The American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll.
Following a tough eight-inning loss against host UC Riverside to open the weekend, the Cougars bounced back and responded with a 6-5 eight-inning win of their own over San Diego. The victory marked the Houston's second extra-inning win of the season.
The Cougars grabbed their second win of the trip with their 10th shutout of the year with a win over Omaha to close out the Highlander Classic. Junior pitcher Trystan Melancon tossed her third-consecutive shutout in the 6-0 win and extended her scoreless inning streak to 17.
Houston rounded out the road trip with a gritty, 1-0 win at Cal State Fullerton to record the team's 11th shutout of the season. The win saw senior pitcher Savannah Heebner help her own cause, driving in the game's only RBI with her single in the sixth. In the circle, Heebner went the distance, finishing the night surrendering four hits and allowing just one walk, having struck out a season-high nine batters in the process.
Perfection
Just a week after posting the second no-hitter of her career, junior pitcher Trystan Melancon tossed Houston's fourth perfect game in program history and just the second one in The American's history. Melancon's perfect outing in the 8-0 win over DePaul (March 2), marked the program's first since Angel Shamblin threw the third of her career in 2008.
She also became the third pitcher in program history to toss three no-hitters in a career. In Houston's 8-0 win over Northern Illinois (Feb. 23), Melancon threw the second no-hitter of her career and became the fifth pitcher to throw multiple no-hitters in a career.
Abby's Road
Following a week in which she led her team to a 5-1 record, freshman outfielder Abby Odneal earned The American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for games played through March 5. With the accolade, Odneal became the second freshmen under head coach Kristin Vesely to earn the honor, joining Tierrah Williams, who received award in 2018.
In six games played, the Missouri City, Texas, native boasted a .500 batting average, drove in six runs and scored six times to go along with a home run. She tallied at least one hit in five of her six games.
Odneal began the week launching the second home run of her career with her two-run shot that cemented a 9-3 win for the Cougars over Texas A&M. At the Red and White Showcase, Odneal put together a perfect outing at the plate with her career-high four hits in Houston's second game against DePaul.
