
Key Defensive Plays Lead to Doubleheader Sweep

Houston claims pair of midweek wins over Baylor
WACO, Texas – The University of Houston Softball team put its leather on display Tuesday in route to a pair of midweek wins at Baylor. With the wins, Houston has now won four of the last six matchups between the two squads.
The Cougars (21-8) opened the day with a 2-0 shutout victory and followed that with a 6-1 win over the Lady Bears (13-11). Houston's shutout marked its 12th of the year, as Baylor was held scoreless for just the second time this season.
Defensive highlights proved to be the stronghold for the Cougars on Tuesday, throwing runners out at the plate and converting a plethora of multiple-out plays as well. On the day, senior outfielder Sarah Barker went 3-7 with a pair of runs scored and a run batted in.
Junior infielder Sarah Queen drove in three runs in game two with her two-out double in the fourth. With a run scored in the bottom of the fifth in the second game, junior pitcher Trystan Melancon had her scoreless inning streak ended at 21 innings.
GAME 1: HOUSTON 2, BAYLOR 0
KEY INNINGS
3rd | With two outs in the inning, junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart singled through the right side and after she stole second, the Cougars had a runner in scoring position. Senior outfielder Sarah Barker then stepped up to the plate and brought Stewart around to score for Houston's first run of the game. After junior infielder Arielle James doubled home Barker, the Cougars took a 2-0 lead, which proved to be the difference in the game.
7th | The Lady Bears never went down without a fight, as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh with just one out. After a fly out to left field for the second out, Barker threw the runner out at home who tried to score and ended the game to seal the 2-0 win for Houston.

3rd | Barker put her cannon on display in the field for the second time of the day, preventing a run from scoring with her starting the relay from the outfield wall. After she gunned it to James in shallow left, James threw it to senior catcher Brooke Vannoy to end the inning.
4th | With senior outfielder Maya Thomas reaching base after placing a bunt down with two runners on, junior infielder Sarah Queen stepped in the box and doubled in all three runners to put the Cougars ahead 3-0 in the game.
5th | Junior catcher Brianna Burton got the rally going for Houston in the fifth, as her double down the line scored Barker on the play. Once Thomas tripled home the Cougars' fifth run of the game, sophomore infielder Tierrah Williams plated Thomas to extend the Houston lead to 6-0.
