Cougars Kick Off Season in Spring Break Invitational

HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Men's and Women's Track & Field teams officially kick off the 2019 outdoor season with the first of three home meets on the outdoor circuit, the Houston Spring Break Invitational, on Thursday at the Carl Lewis Complex.

Houston will also send its men's 4x100- and 4x200-meter relay squads as well as the women's 4x200 team to compete at the TSU Relays on Saturday at TSU Dursley Field.

ABOUT THE SPRING BREAK INVITATIONAL
Houston's first meet of the 2019 outdoor season is scheduled to kick off 10 a.m., with the trials and finals of the women's and men's hammer throw and the men's javelin. Running events are scheduled to open at 1 p.m., with the women's steeplechase.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR
The 2018 outdoor season ended with the 4x100-meter relay team claiming the gold medal at the NCAA Championships with a time of 38.17 to set new Collegiate, NCAA Meet, Hayward Field and school records. With a few different names added to the team, the squad returns for the 2019 season, where they are scheduled to be in action in both the Cougar Spring Break Invitational as well as the TSU relays.

Legendary senior sprinter, Amere Lattin, will return to the squad during the outdoor season to compete in the 400-meter hurdles. Jermaine Holt will return to compete in the 200-meter dash. Along with Holt, Whitney Ochiam will also compete in the 200-meter dash. Samiyah Samuels will continue her incredible season in long jump. Also, Felipe Valencia will return to keep to throw in shot put.

At the Spring Break Invitational, at least 20 Cougars are scheduled to make their outdoor debut at Houston, including Triston Gibbons, Ashley Seymour, Lateef Birks Jr., Jordan Booker and Fredrick Lewis. All made an impact in the indoor championships to help sweeep the American Athletic Conference titles.
