
Houston Splits Opener of Red and White Showcase

Bell tosses one-hit shutout in run-rule win
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team opened up the Red and White Showcase on Friday with a 10-0 win over Texas State before falling to DePaul by a score of 2-0.
Entering Saturday's second day of the three-day tournament, the Cougars sit at 13-6 on the season. Houston's win over the Bobcats (8-8) extended its season-high winning streak to nine, marking the third year in a row the Cougar have posted a winning streak of at least eight games.
Against Texas State, the Cougars had four players tally multiple hits. Junior infielder Arielle James tied a career-high three RBIs with her three-run shot in the third inning. On the rubber, senior pitcher Presley Bell threw her third shutout of the season, surrendering just one hit in the process.
In the nighttime contest with the Blue Demons (15-1), senior pitcher Savannah Heebner tossed her eighth complete-game of the year, striking out seven batters and allowing no walks.

KEY INNINGS
2nd | After senior outfielder Maya Thomas led off the inning with a bunt single, junior infielder Sarah Queen sent a ball back up the middle to quickly put a pair of runners on with nobody out. Once junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart singled to center, the Cougars were ahead by a run. Freshman outfielder Abby Odneal then doubled home Stewart and Queen to stretch the Houston lead to three.
3rd | With one run already crossing the plate in the inning, senior catcher Brooke Vannoy stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded and cashed in a two-RBI double to put the Cougar ahead 6-0. Following a single from Stewart that scored sophomore infielder Aspen Howie, junior infielder Arielle James connected on a three-run shot for her first home run of the season to push the Houston advantage to 10-0.
4th | Senior pitcher Presley Bell entered the fourth without surrendering a hit, before a leadoff single in the inning broke up her no-hit bid. She bounced back adequately though, finishing the game having retired six of the final nine batters she faced.
