Houston Hosts Final Nonconference Tournament

Cougars will hold ‘Bark in the Park’ day on Sunday
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team looks to keep its eight-game winning streak alive this weekend, as the Cougars host the Red and White Showcase from March 1-3 at Cougar Softball Stadium.

This weekend, the Cougars welcome Texas Southern, DePaul and Texas State to Houston. Wichita State will also participate in the tournament but will not face Houston. With the Shockers joining the field late, fans should be advised of the updated game times for the Cougars.

On Sunday, fans will have the opportunity to partake in Houston's 'Bark in the Park' day. Fans are encouraged to bring their dogs to Cougar Softball Stadium but must have a signed waiver before their furry friend can be admitted. The wavier can be retrieved here.

Red and White Showcase Tournament Central
After trailing by three to start the game, Houston stormed back to score nine unanswered runs, including six in the bottom of the third, to take down Texas A&M by a score of 9-3 on Wednesday. The win extended the Cougars' season long winning streak to eight games, where Houston has outscored its opponents 62-6 and posted five shutouts during that stretch.

In the win over the Aggies, the Cougars saw offensive production from seniors Savannah Heebner and Maya Thomas, along with junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart. All three players led Houston with a game-high two hits apiece. Heeber and freshman outfielder Abby Odneal, who blasted her second home run of the season, each drove in a pair of runs.

In the circle, Heebner paced the Cougars, tossing her seventh complete-game of the season. She finished the night without allowing a walk and surrendered two earned runs.

The Cougars enter this weekend riding a season-high eight-game winning streak and during that stretch, Houston has outscored its opponents 62-6, having posted five shutouts in that span.

Since the streak began with a 4-0 win over Louisiana-Monroe (Feb. 17), the Cougars' offense has erupted, averaging 7.8 runs and 8.3 hits per game, while boasting a .344 team batting average and a .513 slugging percentage.

Just Say No... Again
For the second time in her career, junior pitcher Trystan Melancon tossed a no-hitter in Houston's 8-0 win over Northern Illinois (Feb. 23). The no-hitter marked the 17th in program history, as she became the fifth pitcher to throw multiple no-hitters in a career. Falling just three walks shy at earning a perfect game, Melancon finished the game striking out six batters.

Stewart Ain't sSo little
After bolstering a .526 batting average, driving in 12 runs and recording a pair of triples to go along with a home run record, junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart was awarded The American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for games played through Feb. 25.

Stewart also led the Cougars to a perfect 6-0 record on the week, including a 5-0 mark at the Houston Challenge. The Pearland, Texas, native started the weekend with a bang, going 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple and four RBIs, all coming in the first inning of the Cougars' 10-run frame against Incarnate Word. She finished that contest 3-for-3 with a career-high six RBIs.

She followed that performance with another perfect game at the plate in Houston's first win over Northern Illinois, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. The weekend also found her showing off her clutch gene with two walk-off hits Saturday.

Stewart tallied her second triple of the weekend in the Cougars' second 8-0, run-rule victory over Northern Illinois with a two-RBI three-bagger and then singled in the game-winning run to season a 2-1 win over Kennesaw State.
