Melancon Throws Perfect Game in Doubleheader Sweep

Junior pitcher tosses fourth perfect game in program history
HOUSTON – Just one week after tossing the second no-hitter of her career, junior pitcher Trystan Melancon threw a perfect game on Saturday to help lead the University of Houston Softball team to a pair of wins on day two of the Red and White Showcase.
Melancon's perfect game in the 8-0 win over DePaul (15-3) became just the fourth in program history and first since Angel Shamblin threw the third of her career in 2008. Melancon also became the third pitcher in program history to toss three no-hitters in a career.
In Houston's (15-6) contest against the Blue Demons, freshman Abby Odneal was perfect at the plate with a career-high four hits in the matchup. She recorded a career-high two RBIs as well. Junior catcher Brianna Burton and sophomore Aspen Howie rounded out those who recorded multiple hits for the Cougars.
The dominant pitching from the Cougars carried over into their nighttime victory over Texas Southern (1-11), as freshman pitcher Rachel Hertenberger led Houston to the 9-0 win. In the win, she extended her scoreless inning streak to 10, having struck out a career-high eight batters in the process.

KEY INNINGS
1st | Houston's offense came out firing, scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning to grab hold of an early three-run lead. The Cougars showed their aggression on the bases from the start, as three stolen bases helped put them ahead by a run. After freshman Abby Odneal scored thanks to senior outfielder Maya Thomas, junior infielder Sarah Queen doubled home junior catcher Brianna Burton to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead after the first inning.
2nd | By the time junior pitcher Trystan Melancon finished the second inning, she had retired all six batters she faced, having struck out four of them.
3rd | With Queen on second after stealing the base, sophomore infielder Aspen Howie doubled her home to score Houston's sixth run of the game.
5th | After Howie led the inning off with a single through the right side of the field, a walk from freshman outfielder Bethany Busch put a pair of runners on base. Odneal then stepped into the box and singled home Howie from second to seal the 8-0 walk-off win and etch Melancon's name in the record books with her perfect game.

2nd | With sophomore infielder Caela Kincade on base, senior catcher Brooke Vannoy came up to the plate and belted a two-run shot over the fence to put the Cougars ahead by four after two innings.
3rd | Junior infielder Kelli Montgomery broke the game wide open with her two-RBI single. Scoring Thomas and sophomore infielder Charese Wyatt on the play, Montgomery's second hit of the game extended the Cougar lead to 6-0.
4th | After Burton scored off a wild pitch, Wyatt made the game a nine-run contest with her single to center that scored both Busch and junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart.
