Houston Hosts Texas A&M in ‘Strike Out Cancer’ Game

Cougars will auction off items to raise money for cancer research
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Softball team hosts RV/RV Texas A&M in its annual 'Strike Out Cancer' at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at Cougar Softball Stadium.
In an effort to raise money for cancer research, there will be items up for auction that fans can place bids on.
With each side winning four games in the past eight battles, the matchup between Houston and Texas A&M has been neck-and-neck as of late.
Since the Cougars' 4-3 win over the Aggies in 2011, seven of the last eight contests between the teams have been decided by three runs or less, including six matchups that have been decided by a single run during that span.
Houston vs. Texas A&M
The Cougars wrapped up their best week of the 2019 season, having gone a perfect 6-0, including a 5-0 mark at the Houston Challenge. In its six wins, Houston run-ruled its opponents in four games, where the Cougars allowed just three runs during that six-game stretch.
Houston opened the week competing in its first midweek competition of the season, scoring six runs in the top of the seventh to complete the 7-2 comeback win over McNeese, marking The American Athletic Conference's first midweek victory of the season. The contest with the Cowgirls saw junior infielder Arielle James and freshman outfielder Abby Odneal each go 3-for-4, respectively.
In its five matchups at the Houston Challenge, Houston's offense exploded and outscored its opponents 42-1. The Cougars began with weekend with a 10-run first inning against Incarnate Word, having sent 11 batters to the plate before an out was recorded. In that first frame, junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart went 2-for-2 with four RBIs, including a home run and a three-RBI triple. Houston went on to defeat the Cardinals 16-0 in five innings.
The Cougars carried their momentum over to their first of two 8-0, run-rule wins over Northern Illinois. Against the Huskies, Stewart put together another perfect game at the plate, going 3-for-3. Senior pitcher Savannah Heebner tossed a complete-game shutout allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out eight batters in the process.
On Saturday, Houston collected a pair of walk-off hits, thanks to Stewart. She came up to the plate in the bottom of the fifth against Northern Illinois and tripled home a pair of runs to seal the 8-0 win and cement junior pitcher Trystan Melancon's second career no-hitter. Her second walk-off of the day game in the bottom of the eighth against Kennesaw State, where she singled home Heebner to secure the 2-1 win for the Cougars.
The week concluded with Houston's fourth run-rule victory of the week, as the Cougars took down Kennesaw State 8-0 in six innings to win their seventh in a row. Seniors Rachel Hill and Brooke Vannoy each launched their first home run of the season with their back-to-back shots in the second inning.
Stewart Ain't So Little
After bolstering a .526 batting average, driving in 12 runs and recording a pair of triples to go along with a home run record, junior outfielder Lindsey Stewart was awarded The American Athletic Conference Player of the Week for games played through Feb. 25.
Stewart also led the Cougars to a perfect 6-0 record on the week, including a 5-0 mark at the Houston Challenge. The Pearland, Texas, native started the weekend with a bang, going 2-for-2 with a home run, a triple and four RBIs, all coming in the first inning of the Cougars' 10-run frame against Incarnate Word. She finished that contest 3-for-3 with a career-high six RBIs.
She followed that performance with another perfect game at the plate in Houston's first win over Northern Illinois, going 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. The weekend also found her showing off her clutch gene with two walk-off hits Saturday.
Stewart tallied her second triple of the weekend in the Cougars' second 8-0, run-rule victory over Northern Illinois with a two-RBI three-bagger and then singled in the game-winning run to season a 2-1 win over Kennesaw State.
