Cougars host Arizona in three-game series starting Friday
HOUSTON -- The University of Houston Baseball team fell 13-5 to McNeese in 14 innings on Wednesday night at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
With the decision, the Cougars move to 2-2 on the season, while the Cowboys improve to 3-1.
KEY INNINGS
3rd | Sophomore right fielder Drew Minter led off the bottom of the third inning with a single into left field. After sophomore catcher Kyle Lovelace moved the runner with a sacrifice bunt, freshman second baseman Brad Burckel singled Minter home for a 1-0 lead.
5th | With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, junior third baseman Jared Triolo reached on a hit by pitch before senior first baseman Joe Davis homered to center field to make it 3-0.
6th | McNeese cut the lead to two with a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth.
9th | In the ninth, the Cowboys tied the game with a two-RBI single to force extra innings.
14th | McNeese scored 10 runs in the top of the 14th. In the bottom frame, junior Blake Way led off with a pinch-hit double into the right-center gap. Three batters later, Triolo walked, and he and Way each moved up a base on a passed ball before coming around on a double off the wall in right center from Davis for the 13-5 final.
HOUSTON NOTES
Offense:
• Davis led Houston going 3-for-6 with one double, one home run, one walk, four RBI and one run scored.
• Junior left fielder Lael Lockhart Jr. finished 2-for-4, while Burckel went 2-for-5 with one RBI.
• Way (1-for-1), Minter (1-for-5) and junior shortstop Kobe Hyland (1-for-5) each recorded one hit, respectively.
Pitching:
• Senior right-hander pitcher Nolan Bold took the loss, surrendering three runs over two and one-third innings in relief.
• Sophomore Clay Aguilar tossed three scoreless innings, scattering four hits and recording six strikeouts in the start for a no-decision.
• In total, Cougars Spencer Hynes, Ron Brown, Tristen Bayless, Fred Villarreal, Devon Roedahl, Bond, Brayson Hurdsman, Sean Bretz and Tanner Green pitched in relief. Bretz, Green and Hynes made their Houston debuts in the loss.
ON DECK
The Cougars close their homestand with a three-game series against No. 24 Arizona starting Friday at Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park. Fans should note the Saturday and Sunday game times have changed to 7:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively, as announced on Feb. 13.
PARKING IN 2019
Gameday parking is offered in a different capacity than in prior years. Anyone entering Lot 16B (across the street from right field) will be subjected to paying a third party company employed by campus. This lot will no longer be an option for free parking on gamedays. All other lots surrounding the stadium will be free of charge two hours prior to first pitch.
