
Houston Edges USF, 54-52 in Tampa

TAMPA – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team played start to finish in a 54-52 win over USF Sunday afternoon at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Fl.
Behind a team-high 17 points from Julia Blackshell-Fair and 73.3 percent shooting from the stripe, the Cougars improve to 12-11 on the season and 6-4 in American Athletic Conference play.
Both teams got out to hot starts, entering the first media timeout tied up 9-9. Octavia Barnes would get going early, accounting for five of the Cougars first nine points. Houston would makes key plays in transition, going 4-of-6 from long-range, building a six-point lead at the end of the first quarter.
The Cougars continued to play stellar defense, forcing eight turnovers by the USF offense and making plays in transition to hold a lead before the second media timeout. Blackshell-Fair would open things up for the Cougars, appearing as a threat down low with back-to-back driving lay-ups to extend the Cougar lead to six at the halfway point of the second frame. USF would chip away at the Cougar lead with help from Enna Pehadzic who accounted for 16 of the Bulls first half points. Angela Harris would connect on her first three-pointer of the day to give the Cougars a boost as they headed into the break leading 29-28.
USF would strike first, opening the third quarter with layup to take a one-point lead. The Cougars would take back the lead following a layup from Alyssa Okoene. Both teams continued to turn things up on the defensive end with Houston gaining a two-point edge with under four minutes to play in the quarter. A 6-0 run would put the Bulls ahead by one with less than a minute remaining in the quarter. Houston would head into the fourth quarter trailing 42-39.
A pair of made free throws from Blackshell-Fair would cut the lead to three in the early moments of the fourth quarter. Houston would force USF to call a timeout after going on a 6-0 run and taking a one-point lead with just under seven minutes remaining in regulation. Blackshell-Fair would continue to impose her will and come up big for Houston after picking up crucial rebounds and laying them back in to give Houston a 48-44 lead with five minutes to play. As both teams headed into the final two minutes of action, Houston would hold on to a four-point lead after Angela Harris knocked down a pair of free throws. Houston would showcase its aggressive style of defense down the stretch forcing USF to talk things over with less than two minutes to play, following a made free throw from Barnes. With 15 seconds remaining USF would connect on a three-pointer from the corner and cut Houston's lead to one. A foul on Harris would send her to the line where she would hit one to make it a two-point game. Houston would put pressure on the USF offense in the final seconds, resulting in a failed last second shot attempt from the Bulls and a Cougar win on the road.
