Houston Claims Fourth Straight Phill Hansel Invitational

Three program records fall on final day of action
HOUSTON – The 21st-ranked University of Houston Swimming & Diving program won its fourth straight Phill Hansel Invitational on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Houston accumulated 1, 737 points over three days, leading second-place finisher Rice by 593 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Houston got out to a fantastic start on the final day of action at the Phill Hansel Invitational as Ioanna Sacha and Laura Laderoute led the Cougars to a first and second-place finish in the 200 Backstroke. Sacha took the top spot with a NCAA B-Cut time of 1:55.16, setting a program record in the event. Laderoute took second-place at 1:56.61, as five Cougars advanced.
In the final Sacha once again bested her lifetime best and set yet another program record in the event. Sacha finished at 1:55.08 for first-place, followed by Laderoute at 1:56.38, both B-Cuts. Monique Rae placed fourth at 1:59.43, followed Kaley Hoffman in eighth-place at 2:00.90 to round out the A-Final.
The 100 Freestyle saw yet another program record fall as Mykenzie Leehy swam a blistering fast 48.66 to claim both the top spot in the Houston record book and an NCAA B-Cut.
In the final, Leehy would once again snatch the top spot with time of 48.99, Zarena Brown would take third-place in the event at 49.66 picking up 27 points for Houston.
The 200 Breaststroke saw Peyton Kondis break yet another program record in the prelims, swimming 2:09.60 for first-place. The time is an NCAA B-Cut and lifetime best for the senior. Angeliki Mavrantza would advance behind a fifth-place finish at 2:13.44, also an NCAA B-Cut.
Kondis would sweep the Breaststroke events at the Phill Hansel, finished first in the final at 2:10.58, followed by Mavrantza in third place with a B-Cut time of 2:11.34.
Senior Isabel Tank had a stellar day in the pool, leading Houston in the 200 Butterfly with a fourth-place finish and lifetime best in the prelims at 2:00.84. The time marked the sixth-fastest in Houston history.
In the A-Final tank would better her time from prelims for the sixth-fastest time in Houston history and a fourth-place finish at 1:59.99
On the boards, three Cougars would advance to the A-Final of the Platform as Chase Farris won the event with 239.60 points. Katie Deininger finished second-overall with 229.55 points as Jolie Blodgett rounded out the A-Final in 12th-place with 181.70 points.
Samantha Medlin would lead the Cougars in the longest race of the weekend, finishing first in the 1650 Freestyle at 16:54.67. Shayla Erickson would close out the race in 21st-place at 17:41.35.
Houston would end the Phill Hansel just how they started, with a win. Hanna Blewett, Laderoute, Leehy and Brown combined for a time of 3:18.55 in the 400 Freestyle Relay to take first-place in the final event of the meet.
ABOUT THE PHILL HANSEL INVITATIONAL
From 1975-1996, Hansel was the most influential man for the University of Houston swimming and diving team. He guided the Cougars to more than 70 dual meet victories and ten Top-20 finishes at the AIAW and NCAA Championships. All of that hard work paid off, as Phill Hansel was inducted into the Hall of Honor on Nov. 14, 2008. In 1996, Hansel finished out the season with over 39 years of coaching experience and was recognized as one of the most successful collegiate swim coaches in the nation.
In his honor, the University of Houston will host the Phill Hansel every fall.
This year's Phiill Hansel Invitational will include Nevada, UC Davis, Rice, Air Force, Tulane, Colorado State, Florida Gulf Coast, Northern Colorado, Washington State, North Texas, Nebraska Omaha and New Mexico.
