Cougars remain unblemished in conference play
NEW ORLEANS – Behind another five-set, comeback effort, the University of Houston Volleyball team continued its undefeated start to American Athletic Conference play with a 3-2 (25-22, 18-25, 17-25, 25-16, 15-12) victory over Tulane on Friday night.
Â
With the win over the Green Wave (11-4, 2-1 American), the Cougars (9-9, 3-0 American) are off to their best start in conference play since 2013. Houston has also won its past four matches, all of which have gone the distance.
Â
Friday night saw Houston's defense on display, as the Cougars held the Green Wave to a .112 hitting percentage, which is a season-low for Tulane. Houston's 11 blocks in the contest is also tied for the most an opponent has posted against Tulane this season.
Â
While freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos tallied a match-high eight blocks, the 26 digs that senior libero Katie Karbo recorded moved her into second on Houston's all-time list with 2,122 in her career. Karbo 257 digs away from the American Athletic Conference record of 2,379 set by Morgan Heise of SMU.
Â
Offensively, junior setter Abby Irvine (23 assists, 14 digs) and sophomore setter Kelsey Childers (22 assists, 13 digs) each recorded a double-double, marking the fifth time this season Houston has had multiple players record a double-double in the same match. The 23 assists from Childers is a career-high.
Â
Sophomore middle blocker Kendall Haywood and sophomore outside hitter Alexis Cheatum each posted a season-high in kills. Haywood had 13, while Cheatum tallied 11.
Houston 3, Tulane 2
Set 1
After scoring four-straight points, the Green Wave held an early three-point lead over the Cougars. As the two teams traded off scores, it was Cheatum that kept Houston within arm's reach, as her kill brought the score to 9-6. Once freshman outside hitter Abbie Jackson cut the deficit to one, Tulane was forced to call a timeout. The Green Wave responded and put together a 6-2 run to go up 17-12, but the Cougars found a rebuttal of their own. Trailing 22-19, Houston scored the final six points of the set to win the frame 25-22 and take a 1-0 match lead.
Â
Set 2
Tulane opened the second frame having scored seven of the first 10 points to grab a four-point lead. Once the Cougars recorded their fifth service ace of the match, courtesy of Irvine, Houston found itself trailing by just three at 12-9. From there, the Green Wave pushed their lead to six, forcing Houston to call a timeout, but that wouldn't be enough to stop the momentum, as Tulane went on to win the set 25-18 and tie the match at one heading into the intermission.
Â
Set 3
Freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos continued to do what she does best and recorded one of her match-high eight blocks on the night to put the Cougars out in front by a point. After Houston pushed the lead to three, Tulane scored four points in a row to take a one-point advantage at 7-6. Haywood then brought Houston to within a pair at 14-12 with one of her kills and after a slam from Tullos, the Cougars trailed by just one. The late push from the Cougars wasn't enough though, as the Green Wave went on to score eight of the final nine points to win 25-17 and take a 2-1 match lead.
Â
Set 4
The two teams battled it out to start the fourth, but another big-time kill from Tullos put Houston ahead by three and forced Tulane to call a timeout, trailing 12-9. Houston then pushed its advantage to four after a kill from Haywood gave the Cougars the 17-13 lead. That kill was the start of an 8-3 run that Houston used to cruise to the 25-16 set victory and force the decisive set.
Â
Set 5
A monster block from sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut gave Houston an early 4-2 edge, but Tulane managed to quickly tie it up. Both the Cougars and the Green Wave found themselves in a seesaw battle until a kill from senior outside Megan Duncan put Houston back ahead 9-8. That kill began a 3-1 run from Houston, which was capped off by a block from Theut and Cheatum to put the Cougars ahead 12-9. Tulane found a way to narrow the gap at 14-12, but Cheatum's final kill of the match cemented the 15-12 set victory for the Cougars to complete the 3-2 comeback win.
