Cougars win eighth match in a row; improve to 7-0 in conference
HOUSTON – The University of Houston Volleyball team extended its season-high winning streak to eight after the Cougars took down ECU in comeback fashion by a score of 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 29-27, 16-14) on Friday night inside the Fertitta Center.
Â
With the win, the Cougars (13-9, 7-0 American) continue their undefeated run in the American Athletic Conference, as Houston's 7-0 mark in conference action is its best start since 2000 when the team began Conference USA play 8-0. Friday night's victory over the Pirates (14-6, 2-5 American) is also Houston's seventh five-set win of the season. The Cougars are 7-3 in five-set contests this year.
Â
On the night, senior outside hitter Megan Duncan led the way for the Cougars posting a team-best 19 kills in the match. She was joined by sophomore middleblocker/right side hitter Kendall Haywood as those to surpass the double-digit kill mark. Haywood's 17 kills ties a career-high.
Â
Junior setter Abby Irvine commanded the Houston offense with her career-high 55 assists. It's the second time this season she has eclipsed the 50-assist plateau. She added 16 digs to notch her conference leading 14th double-double of the season.
Â
Houston's defense was anchored in the back row by senior libero Katie Karbo, who's 19 digs led all players. Freshman outsider hitter Abbie Jackson (13), along with freshmand defensive specialist Karly Berkland (14), rounded out the Houston players with 10-plus digs.
Houston 3, ECU 2
Set 1
After the Cougars found themselves trailing early in the match, Duncan managed to close the gap to five with her second slam of the night. Once the Pirates stretched their lead to seven, Houston was forced to call a timeout trailing 17-10 to stop the momentum. From there, the Cougars clawed their way to narrow the deficit to three as late as 23-20, but it was too much to overcome as ECU claimed the opening set 25-21.
Â
Set 2
The second frame began in a seesaw battle between the two and after ECU built itself a three-point advantage, Irvine brought the score to within a pair at 10-8, as she caught the defense napping with her dump over the net. Once Houston tied the score at 16, three unanswered points from the Cougars gave them a 19-16 edge. A solo block from the nation's leader in that category, freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos, maintained Houston's three-point edge, as Houston closed out the frame on a 6-0 run win the set 25-19 and tie the match at one.
Â
Set 3
ECU jumped out to the first lead in the third, as the Pirates complied a three-point edge at 11-8 to force a Houston timeout. Coming out of the break, the Cougars scored four-straight points and took their first lead of the set thanks to a kill from Tullos. The Pirates found a way to stay within striking distance, as they later went on a run to claim a late 23-20 lead, which was enough for them to take the third set 25-20.
Â
Set 4
In what turned out to be a marathon of set, Houston found itself out in front first, courtesy of a kill from Jackson. Duncan then stretched the lead to four for Houston at 15-11 with her 16th slam of the night. After ECU climbed its way back into it, the two squads traded blows and fought off set-points from one another, but it was Tullos and Haywood who sealed the 29-27 victory for Houston and force the decisive fifth frame.
Â
Set 5
Tullos continued to make her presence felt at the net, as a kill, followed by a block put Houston out in front 4-2. ECU bounced back and put together a 7-3 run to claim a two-point edge. Once the Pirates went up three, the Cougars rallied off four consecutive points to reclaim the lead, but ECU didn't go quietly. After tying the score at 14, Houston finally fought off ECU courtesy of Duncan sealing the 16-14 set victory to cement the 3-2 comeback match win.
