Cougars start conference play 6-0 for the first time since 2000
TULSA, Okla. – For the first time since 2000, the University of Houston Volleyball team is 6-0 to start conference play, as the Cougars downed Tulsa by a score of 3-1 (28-26, 25-23, 22-25, 25-23) on Sunday afternoon.
With the win over the Golden Hurricane (11-8, 4-2 American), the Cougars also extended their season-high winning streak to seven. Houston (12-9, 6-0 American) now holds a two-match lead in The American West Division standings.

Senior outside hitter Claire Karsten (15 digs) and freshman Karly Berkland (12 digs) rounded out those with 10-plus digs for Houston.
Houston 3, Tulsa 1
Set 1
The first set was nothing but a nail-biting that saw 17 ties and 12 lead changes, as neither team was able to gain an edge on one another. Once Tulsa built itself a two-point lead, Houston called a timeout, trailing 11-9. The Cougars came out of the break firing though, as a 7-3 run put them ahead by a pair. After a huge block from sophomore right side hitter Kendall Haywood and freshman middle blocker Rachel Tullos, Houston held a 22-20 lead. The emotional frame eventually went in favor of the Cougars, as an attacking error from the Golden Hurricane sealed the 28-26 win for Houston.
Set 2
The Cougars carried that momentum in the second set, jumping out to an early 6-3 lead to start things off. Tulsa then narrowed the score to within a point, but Irvine dumped the ball over the net to put the Cougars out in front 11-9. Houston then stretched the advantage to five after a kill from freshman outside hitter Abbie Jackson, but Tulsa found a rebuttal of its own and brought the score to 19-17. Houston prevailed, as a blocked at the net from Jackson and sophomore middle blocker Isabel Theut sealed the 25-23 set victory for the Cougars to take a 2-0 match lead at the intermission.
Set 3
The block party continued for Houston, thanks to Duncan and Theut who gave the Cougars an early edge to start the third. Once Houston took an 11-7 lead, Tulsa battled back to take a one-point lead of its own, forcing the Cougars to call a timeout. After the Golden Hurricane went up by three, Houston narrowed deficit to one, but it proved to be too much to overcome as Tulsa claimed the third set 25-22.
Set 4
Jackson sustained her presence on the floor, as her kill tied the score at 12. After the Cougars took at three-point lead at 18-15, the Golden Hurricane were forced to call a timeout. Tulsa managed to close the gap to a single point late in the match, but a block at the net from Irvine and Theut sealed the 25-23 set win and 3-1 match victory for Houston.
