Jasmyne Harris leads Cougars with 17 points to christen new home
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team opened a new era with its first game inside the Fertitta Center. Houston fell 68-52 on Thursday.
Texas A&M grabbed an early 8-0 lead over the first five minutes of the game, as Houston saw good looks, but could not get anything to fall. Aaliyah Wilson, N'Dea Jones, Ciera Johnson and Chennedy Carter each scored buckets before Jasmyne Harris stopped the run with a 3-pointer.
After another score from Jones pushed the lead back to seven at 10-3, Octavia Barnes connected on a triple of their own, followed by a layup from Harris to pull back within two at 10-8. The two teams would trade buckets the remainder of the period, and the Aggies held a 14-10 advantage after the first 10 minutes.
Defense continued to be the story in the second quarter, but Texas A&M pushed the lead back to seven at 19-12 on a 3-point play from Chennedy Carter with 5:28 remaining in the half. The Aggies would keep the lead at seven the majority of the remainder of the quarter, before Carter gave Texas A&M a 26-18 lead with 1:28 remaining.
Houston would close the half on a 5-0 spurt however, to cut the score back to a one-possession game at the intermission. Serithia Hawkins opened the run with a steal and a layup the other way before Barnes knocked down another 3-pointer right before the buzzer to cut the lead to 26-23.
The Cougars and Aggies traded scores in the early part of the period, and with 7:55 remaining in the quarter, Jasmyne Harris knocked down a layup to cut the score to 30-27. From there however, Texas A&M would go on a 15-0 run to blow the game open. Johnson scored nine of the Aggies' 15 points in the surge and finished the contest with 11 points.
The Cougars would respond with a run of their own over the final minute of the period. Tatyana Hill started the spurt with a pair of free throws before buckets from Dorian Branch and Julia Blackshell-Fair added a free throw and a layup respectively to cut the lead to 47-34 after three.
Houston scored five of the first seven points of the fourth quarter to pull back within 10 with 8:19 remaining in the quarter. Wilson grabbed the first score for Texas A&M, before Barnes added five straight points on a layup and a 3-pointer to cut the lead to 49-39.
The Cougars cut the score down to eight a few possessons later on a layup from Blackshell-Fair, but they would never get any closer, eventually falling 68-52.

- After 20 months away from home, Houston opened a new era, when they played their first game inside the Fertitta Center. The new home of the Cougars underwent a $60-million renovation following the 2016-17 season.
- Houston tabbed 13 steals in the contest, just under their season-average of 13.3. Houston entered the game with an NCAA-leading 120 steals.
