Cougars wraps non-conference home stand with 65-61 loss to UT Arlington
HOUSTON – The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team dropped its non-conference, home finale 65-61 in overtime against UT Arlington on Monday inside the Fertitta Center.
Houston raced out to a five-point advantage early in the first quarter. After the Lady Mavericks grabbed the first bucket of the game, Houston answered with back-to-back 3-pointers from Serithia Hawkins and Angela Harris before Hawkins added a free throw to cap the 7-0 run.
The two squads would trade buckets the remainder of the way, and four more Cougars, Myyah West, Jasmyne Harris, Tatyana Hill and Julia Blackshell-Fair would each find the scoreboard en route to giving the Cougars a 17-14 advantage after one quarter. The Cougars were able to get out and run in the first 10 minutes, holding a 9-0 advantage in fast break points.
Defenses took over in the second quarter with neither team being able to take an advantage larger than five points. Jasmyne Harris grabbed the first bucket of the half on a strong take to the hole, and the teams would go back-and-forth over the first half of the period.
However, after Dorian Branch drilled Houston's fifth 3-pointer of the first half to give the Cougars a 27-23 lead, UTA's defense would clamp down in a big way. However, the Cougars would go on a 6-0 spurt thanks to a jumper from Branch, a free throw from Hawkins and a 3-pointer from Jasmyne Harris to give Houston a 35-34 lead at the under-5 media timeout.
UTA would regain the lead with under a minute to go on a jumper from Misty Dossey, however Angela Harris would beat the buzzer from deep to give Houston a 42-40 advantage after three quarters of play. The Cougars held the Lady Mavericks to just 11.8 percent (2-of-17) shooting in the period and limited them to just eight points.

Houston would answer on the next possession with a 3-pointer from Angela Harris before a Hawkins bucket with 3:08 to play pushed the lead to four at 55-51.
The next four points however would belong to UTA's Johnson who knocked down a pair from the line before tying the game just under a minute later on a 15-foot jump shot.
