Fifth-year head coach led Houston to WNIT postseason action in 2018
HOUSTON – Coming off the first postseason berth for the Houston Women's Basketball program in the last seven years, Head Coach Ronald Hughey has signed a three-year extension to his existing contract through the 2022 season.
“Ron had a vision for our program when he joined the UH family and it has been exciting to see the steps taken to reach it. He and his staff continue to push our student-athletes to new heights on and off the court,” Houston Vice President for Athletics Chris Pezman said.
Hughey, who is set to begin his fifth season at the helm, is fresh off leading the Cougars to a 20-win season for the first time since the 2010-11 season. The 2017-18 Cougars finished fifth in American Athletic Conference play, their highest finish since joining the league, and punched the team's first berth to the postseason in seven years with a trip to the WNIT.
“I'm incredibly happy for this opportunity,” Hughey said. “First, I want to think my players and coaching staff, because without them, this would not be possible. I love the University of Houston, and I'm ready to be here forever. I'm happy to be at a place where the university and the administration care about women's basketball. This administration, from (Vice President of Athletics) Chris Pezman and (Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development/SWA) DeJuena Chizer and everybody in between, cares about who we are and how we advance, and that's not something you have everywhere.”
Hughey's Cougars have turned in impressive performances in his four seasons. In back-to-back years, the Cougars set the program record for 3-pointers made in a single season while breaking the single-game record twice during the 2017-18 season. Last year's squad affectionately earned the nickname the 'Cardiac Coogs' after completing nine second-half comebacks when trailing by eight or more points.
In his time with the Cougars, Hughey has landed some of the top recruiting classes in program history. The Cougars have signed two top-100 prospects in his tenure, and Hughey has brought in Serithia Hawkins, Jasmyne Harris and Angela Harris, all of whom earned American Athletic Conference All-Freshman honors.
