HOUSTON â€" The Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team fell 95-35 to No. 1/1 UConn, on Saturday, inside H&PE Arena.
UConn opened the game on a 7-0 run, with jumpers from Katie Lou Samuelson and Kia Nurse, before Crystal Dangerfield capped the spurt with a 3-pointer with 7:56 remaining in the opening frame. Myyah West put the Cougars on the board for the first time with a layup just 30 seconds later, but the Huskies followed with another 7-0 spurt over the next 4:03.
After Jasmyne Harris stopped the run with a layup of her own, UConn held the Cougars scoreless for the remainder of the opening frame, scoring the final nine points of the quarter and taking a 23-4 lead into the first break. UConn shot 56.3 percent (9-of-16) in the first quarter while limiting the Cougars to just 13.3 percent (2-of-15).
The Cougars cut into the lead on the first possession of the second quarter, when Serithia Hawkins found the lane and laid the ball up-and-in for her first basket of the night. However, UConn would respond with another big run, pushing the lead to 32-6 before Harris knocked down a 3-pointer at the 6:01 mark.
Harris and Octavia Barnes would each make a free throw, and West added another bucket over the remainder of the half, but the Cougars trailed 45-13 heading into the intermission.
The Huskies lockdown defense continued into the second half, holding the Cougars to just eight points on 3-of-16 shooting in the game. The Huskies scored the first five points of the half, before Jasmyne Harris knocked down a pair of free throws at the 7:24 mark. UConn would then open up a 12-2 run, before Harris again snapped the spurt with a jumper in the lane.
Houston would pick up back-to-back jumpers late in the third quarter, from Mariah Mitchell and Barnes, but UConn took a 72-21 advantage into the final frame.
Houston's offense found a little life in the final 10 minutes of the game, beginning on the opening possession, when Angela Harris connected on her first 3-pointer of the afternoon. Barnes followed Harris' shot with a layup after a Cougar stop, but UConn would again answer with a 5-0 run.
Jasmyne Harris would score Houston's next five points, giving her a team-high 15 in the contest, and Mitchell and Quatera Limbrick picked up buckets down the stretch, but the Cougars fell 95-35.

TOP PERFORMERS
Houston: Sophomore Guard Jasmyne Harris paced the Cougars on offense in the contest, finishing the game with 15 points. Myyah West led Houston on the glass with seven rebounds, including five on the offensive end, and Serithia Hawkins pulled down six boards despite playing just 12 minutes after an ankle injury sidelined her late in the second quarter.
UConn: UConn had four players reach double-figures, including a game-high 19 from Azura Stevens. Katie Lou Samuelson and Kia Nurse each finished the contest with 17 points, while Crystal Dangerfield added 11. Stevens led the Huskies on the glass, completing the double-double with 10 rebounds.
NEWS AND NOTES
- With her offensive rebound in the first quarter, junior Serithia Hawkins now has 236 offensive boards in her career, moving her past Chandi Jones (235; 2000-04) for eighth on the all-time Houston list.
- With 15 points in the contest, sophomore Jasmyne Harris posted her 10th straight double-digit scoring game. Harris has averaged 26.2 points per game in conference play.

Houston heads out on the road for a 2-game trip, beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 16 with a 6 p.m., tipoff at Temple, in Philadelphia. The Cougars will then meet East Carolina on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 4 p.m., in Greenville, N.C.
