HOUSTON -- The Houston Soccer team will open its 2017 campaign with matchups against Texas Southern on Aug. 18 and Northern Arizona on Aug. 20. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m. starts at Carl Lewis Complex.
COUGAR BITES
- Head Coach Diego Bocanegra is entering his debut season at the helm of the Houston Soccer program.
- Houston returns over 50 percent of goals scored from a year ago, including scoring leader Selena Peters who posted four goals in 2016.
- The Cougars return the 2016 assists leader in Peters who tallied up five assists in 2016.
- Houston returns nine starters from the 2016 squad, as well as 11 returners who saw action last season.
- The Cougars added 10 incoming freshman to their 2017 signing class from Texas, Nevada, and Utah.
LAST TIME OUT
- Houston is coming off a 0-0 tie at UTSA.
- Jazmin Grant and Peters lead the Cougars with three shots each, including two shots on goal from Grant.
- Three Cougars saw time in goal for Houston. Rachel Estopare got the starting nod while Kate Godfrey and Kaitlin Sterner split time during the second frame.
SCOUTING THE TIGERS
- Texas Southern ended its 2016 season with an 11-7-1 overall record and a 8-1-1 mark in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.
- Kathyrn Saunders opens her third season at the helm of the TSU soccer program, having accumulated a 24-28-4 record.
- TSU returns seven starters from last season, including Paige Hayward who led the team in goals, assists and points. Hayward tallied up 31 points off of 13 goals and five assists during the 2016 season.
SCOUTING THE LUMBERJACKS
- Northern Arizona will open its 2017 season at Texas State before heading to Houston.
- NAU ended its 2016 season with a 10-7-5 overall record, including a 5-2-3 mark in the Big Sky Conference.
- Andre Luciano opens his 17th season at the helm of the NAU soccer program, having accumulated a 131-135-47 overall record.
- NAU returns 15 letterwinners and three All-Big Sky honorees.

UPCOMING PROMOTIONS
2017 Soccer Season Kickoff: The season starts at home on Friday, Aug. 18th at 7 p.m. when Houston takes on Texas Southern. Inflatables for kids 12 and under will be available starting one hour before the game and the first 100 fans get a Houston Soccer t-shirt for free!
Shasta Blast Celebration: Inflatables will be set up one hour prior for kids 12 and under, plus posters and post-game autographs for all. With the help of SAAC, Houston student athletes will be in on the action with a halftime relay race.
