HOUSTON â€" For a lot of student-athletes and University of Houston students alike, the winter break is a time to relax and visit with family and friends. However for junior defender Megan Goh, the winter break meant a time to help the less fortunate.
"It was an amazing opportunity to be able to go on this International Medical Relief Trip to help those that are far less fortunate than I," Goh Said. "I was able to be in the field and really see how much our help was making a difference in the lives of others."
Goh spent two weeks this winter with 14 other University of Houston students and 16 medical professionals volunteering with the International Medical Relief Foundation. The group provided medical supplies and instructions on how the people of India could better care for themselves.
A typical day in India for Goh and her peers started at 5 a.m. The group would wake to watch the sunrise from the roof of the orphanage and girls dormitory that they were staying in. From there they would have a traditional Indian breakfast and find out their assignments for the day and where they would be working.
Assignments varied from working in the pharmacy to nursing and wellness and even helping the doctors give physicals or dental work. The group was also in charge of giving educational modules like teaching the local people how to clean their water, how to brush their teeth, and essential basic hygiene needs like washing their hands.
The day in India would end at 6 p.m., when the clinic would close and the group would travel back to their host site for dinner and a debriefing meeting to discuss what they could do better and differently the next day.
The hard work she experience is no new task for Goh. The Fort Worth, Texas native not only works hard on the soccer pitch, but is a 4.0 student in her Pre-Med program at the University of Houston as well.
"It was truly priceless," Goh said. "It is so easy to forget how lucky I am to be here in the states, at this great university, and part of this athletic program, but going to India has grounded me and really given me perspective to realize how blessed I am. I hope to be able to continue with medical assistance abroad and join Doctors Without Borders in the future."
