Valiant Effort Falls Shy For Cougars

HOUSTON â€" Despite a ferocious second half comeback, the Houston Cougar Women's Basketball team fell just shy in a 61-56 effort against Texas State, inside Hofheinz Pavilion, on Wednesday. Sophomore Serithia Hawkins collected her fifth career double-double in the contest.
"We have to shoot the ball better," Head Coach Ronald Hughey said. "We have to shoot the ball better, and we have to play for 40 minutes. I thought we only played for 30 minutes tonight. The effort was there late in the ballgame."
The Cougars struggled to find a rhythm in the first half, and only scored seven points in the first quarter. After the Cougars cut the lead to two at 9-7, the Bobcats finished the quarter on an 8-0. Houston wrapped the quarter led by three points from freshman Angela Harris.
Harris added five more points in the second quarter, but it was Hawkins who kept the Cougars in the game in the first half. The Moore, Okla., native pulled down six rebounds and added four points in the second alone, but Houston trailed 36-20 heading to the break.

TURNING POINT
After both teams struggled to find offense in the third quarter, the game turned to the final 10 minutes with Texas State ahead 43-29. After the two teams traded buckets for the first four minutes, Houston used a 16-2 run to cut the lead to 54-51, led by Hawkins who scored seven in the stretch. The Cougars would pull within three once more, but not cut the lead any further.
TOP PERFORMERS
Houston: Hawkins finished the game with 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her fifth career double-double. Harris led the team with a career-best 17 points, on 7-of-18 shooting above her team-leading average of 13.3 per game.
Texas State: The Bobcats had three players reach double-figures in the contest led by Amber Jones' 15 points. Taeler Deer added 13, while Kiani Lurry scored 11. On the glass, Kaitlin Walla pulled down six rebounds, while Ti'Aira Pitts added five.
NEWS AND NOTES
- Harris and Hawkins' career-bests weren't the only top marks in the game. Freshman Jasmyne Harris pulled down nine rebounds to collect her new high mark.
- The Cougars forced the Bobcats to commit 28 turnovers which led to 24 points off those turnovers.
UP NEXT FOR THE COUGARS
The Cougars return to Hofheinz Pavilion after the Thanksgiving Holiday for a 7 p.m., tipoff against Mercer, inside Hofheinz Pavilion, on Friday, Nov. 25. Following the matchup with the Bears, the Cougars will head back on the road for a return match against UTRGV in a rematch of their 2015 matchup.
