HOUSTON - Houston Volleyball continued its spring training as the Cougars defeated crosstown rival Houston Baptist in a five-game match (25-19, 18-25, 25-19, 27-25, 15-11) Monday evening.
"It was good to get out and see live action with this team. Good game speed allowed these girls to get some competition time in after the spring practices," Head Coach Kaddie Platt said.
Houston picked up a 25-19 win over the Huskies to open the match, but HBU battled back and claimed set two with a 25-18 win.
The Cougars battled back to take the remaining three sets from the Huskies.
A great offensive outing by freshman Maddie Kucera led the Cougars to the 4-1 win. She finished the match with a team-leading 22 kills. Starting libero Olivia O'Dell also kept the Cougars in the match with her defense in the back row.
"Olivia is really stepping into the role of libero. She had some very impressive defensive efforts throughout the match and is really coming into leading the court," Platt said.
"Offense was delivered by Keandra and Sophie. Both did a great job defensively and kept all our hitters in the game with their sets."
