TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The lead changed 11 times throughout the game, but in the end it was Alabama that was able to squeak out a 51-44 victory over Houston, Sunday afternoon at Foster Auditorium.
Sophomore guard Marche' Amerson, senior forward Te'onna Campbell, and senior center Yasmeen Thompson all had nine points for the Cougars (3-6), while Thompson also pulled down a team-leading eight rebounds in the loss.
Shafontaye Meyers led all scorers with 14 points, including hitting a couple of three pointers down the stretch to secure the win for the Crimson Tide (4-5). Daisha Simmons collected 13 points and Briana Hutchen put in 12 points, while Nikki Hegstetter pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds in the win.
Similar to the Washington game last time out, UH got off to a fast start, at one point owning a lead as high as 11-4, after Campbell nailed a jumper with 10:58 remaining in the first half.
The Cougar defense was stifling, as it held the Crimson Tide to just 9-of-30 shooting for 30 percent in the first half, while it shot just 3-of-10 from downtown, also for 30 percent.
Despite not attempting a free throw in the first half, Houston was able to overcome early foul trouble itself, to take a 25-24 advantage into halftime, after junior guard Demetria Foreman put in a runner at the buzzer.
Amerson began the second half, just as she began the game, knocking down a jumper from the left wing on Houston's first possession of the second period to extend the advantage to 27-24 over Alabama.
However, that would be the last lead the Cougars would see, as the Crimson Tide grinded out a mini 12-3 scoring run to take a 36-30 advantage with 10:42 remaining in the game.
The Cougars would never fall out of the game though, as they got it to as close as 38-36 with 4:27 left to play, after a Campbell made free throw.
Alabama was able to convert on three triples within the last 4:11 to hold off the Cougar rally.
Houston will continue its season-long three-game road swing when it takes on Texas State next Sunday at 2:00 p.m. CT.
