HOUSTON - Nine home games and three NCAA tournament teams highlight the University of Houston soccer program's 2012 schedule, which was announced by head coach Chris Pfau Thursday.
"I am very excited to get the season going," Pfau said. "The non-conference schedule gives me and our staff a good evaluation of the team before going into Conference USA play. My goal is to get us sharp and in rhythm before heading into conference play. This non-conference schedule will allow us to do just that."
"Conference USA is going to be tough this season," Pfau added. "Our goal is to be competitive and make the conference championship."
Houston will kick off the season with a home and road contest during the first weekend. The season opener will be played at Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. Aug. 17, followed by the home opener against Houston Baptist at 7 p.m. Aug. 19.
The Cougars will then fight through a five-game, non-conference stretch from Aug. 26-Sept. 9, beginning with a trip to North Texas. The Cougars look to snap the Mean Green's eight-game home winning streak.
They will then travel to Louisiana, where they will face both Louisiana-Lafayette (Aug. 31) and LSU (Sept. 2).
The road swing will come to an end in Tempe, Ariz., where the Cougars will take part in the Sun Desert Classic. Houston will face Arizona State (Sept. 7) and Arizona (Sept. 9). These two games will mark the first time the Cougars have met these two teams in program history.
The Cougars close out non-conference play against UTSA at 1 p.m. Sept. 16.
Houston begins its final Conference USA season, before moving to the BIG EAST in 2013 with home games against SMU (Sept. 21) and Tulsa (Sept. 23).
Houston will then alternate home-and-away conference weekends. Home matches against East Carolina (Oct. 5) and Marshall (Oct. 7) are situated between two road weekends that include games against UCF (Sept. 28), Southern Miss (Sept. 30), UAB (Oct. 12), and Memphis (Oct. 14).
The Cougars wrap up the regular season with three consecutive home contests. The homestand begins against Colorado College (Oct. 19) and UTEP (Oct. 21), before hosting cross-town rival, Rice, at 7 p.m. Oct. 26.
This will be the fifth straight year that Houston will finish the regular season against Rice. For the past two seasons, the contests between these two teams have ended in a draw.
The Conference USA Championship will be held Oct. 31- Nov. 4 in El Paso, Texas, at University Field on the campus of UTEP. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
