HOUSTON - The University of Houston swimming and diving team leads Rice (115-68), Tulane (120-65) and trails No. 23 LSU (102-84) after the first day of competition in the quad meet hosted by the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
The Cougars won four events capped by a come-from-behind victory in the 400-free relay (3:28.62) in the final race of the evening. The time nearly matched a season best for the squad who was pleased with many personal and seasonal best times falling at this point of the season.
"That last relay was amazing," said Busch. "Right now we're unshaved, three weeks out from the conference championships and our bodies are tired. To put out a performance like that, that's really good"
"I want people to race and get up for relays. Relays should be the pride and staple of this program. You have to be able to give better effort when you have three teammates standing behind you."
Houston took first place in two other freestyle events.
Sophomores Heather Winn (10:16.22), Laykin Lowry (10:23.20) and Emma Nelson (10:34.33) all swam personal bests to finish 1-3-6 in the 1,000 free.
Senior Kim Eeson (1:51.77) and Moira Fraser (1:54.66) finished first and second place in the 200-yard IM. It was the second week in a row the Zimbabwe native took top place in the event and the third of the season.
Eeson also claimed a runner up finish in the 50 free (23.85).
Reigning C-USA Diver of the Week Julia Lonnegren also defended the home turf in an event for the second week in a row as the junior placed first in the 1M (299.80). Freshman Natasha Burgess had to settle for second prize (274.45) to the upperclassmen Lonnegren for the third time this year.
"I'm happy with where we're at after the first day, real happy. I an't wait to get back out there tomorrow and knock down some great times that will give us confidence moving forward."
