HOUSTON --- University of Houston head women's soccer coach Susan Bush will welcome 13 returning letterwinners along with seven freshmen and one transfer when the Cougars report Thursday for preseason camp. Houston is scheduled to hit the practice field for the first time Friday at 8:30 a.m. and will return for an evening practice at 5:00 p.m.
With 13 returning players from last year's 12-5-4 Cougar women's soccer team, including NSCAA All-Region Team selection Katelyn Rhodes and Conference USA All-Freshman Team selections Cami Koski, Danielle Munoz and Jasmine Martinez, in addition to 2010 C-USA Coach of the Year Susan Bush, excitement is building around the University of Houston women's soccer 2011 season.
Returning starters include seniors Stephanie Derieg and Ryan Bruz, junior Katelyn Rhodes and sophomores Sami Sackos, Kylie Cook, Jasmine Martinez, and Danielle Munoz.
Other returning letterwinners include Fabi Cirino, Cami Koski, Stephanie Brown, Kaci Bush, Morgan Vela, and Jessica Zavalza.
In addition, the Cougars will welcome newcomers Jacey Bowers, Ashley Coley, Courtney Dunstan, McKhenzie Raines, Kayla Walker, Alexis Weaver, Kelsey Zamara, Sharis LaChappelle and senior transfer Lisa Murer to the squad.
The Cougars plan to hit the ground running as they have less than three weeks to prepare before their 7 p.m. home opener against Texas August 22.
The biggest void left for the Cougars to fill will be the loss of leading goal scorer Lauri Byrne. Look for sophomores Sami Sackos and Kylie Cook to be the new leaders of the Cougar offensive attack as they finished second and third, respectively, in goals scored and points for the Cougars in 2010.
Last season Houston earned a spot in the C-USA tournament and finished third to conclude the best season in program history. The Cougar women's soccer team looks to continue that success and be a factor in the 2011 league race as well.
