SEATTLE, Wash. - The University of Houston women's basketball team dropped an 85-60 decision to Washington on Sunday afternoon at Alaska Airlines Arena.
The Cougars, who fielded only seven players for the fourth time this season, couldn't overcome a significant size disadvantage, losing the rebound battle by a 56-34 margin while being outscored in the paint, 36-14.
Senior guard Roxana Button extended her double-digit scoring streak to 11 contests with a game-high 21 points to go with six rebounds, which matched a career high. Button, who played all 40 minutes, attacked constant pressure, converting 11 free-throws on a career-high 17 attempts.
Fellow senior Michelle White also notched career bests with 11 points and a team-high five assists in 38 minutes of play. The New Haven, Conn., native was 5-of-13 from the field to set a new career high in points for the second-straight game.
Freshman forward Amanda Lawson tallied eight points and four rebounds despite playing only eight minutes in the first half due to foul trouble, while fellow newcomers Tahlia Pope and Voché Martin also recorded seven points.
Houston trailed by 26 with 11:49 left to play when Roxana Button drained a 3-pointer and followed with a 3-point play, igniting a 13-2 run to cut the lead to 15 with 7:11 remaining. The winded Cougars couldn't get any closer however, as the Huskies put together a 14-3 run in just under four minutes to put the contest out of reach.
The Huskies shot 47 percent (30-of-64) from the field while limiting Houston to a 28-percent (18-of-65) shooting performance.
The Cougars forced 21 Washington turnovers to only 14 Houston miscues and outscored the Huskies by a 21-14 margin in points off turnovers.
Mackenzie Argens led the way for the Huskies on Sunday with 19 points and 17 boards, while Kellie McCann-Smith (14), Regina Rogers (12) and Mollie Williams (11) also scored in double figures.
Houston returns to action on Jan. 2 against New Mexico in Albuquerque to wrap up non-conference play.
