HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team will play its fourth-straight game at Hofheinz Pavilion when it hosts TCU at 7 p.m., Thursday evening.
The Cougars have been decimated by injuries this season, playing primarily with only seven players last week in losses to Oral Roberts, Yale and McNeese State.
Senior guard Roxana Button has shouldered the load for the Cougars, averaging 18.7 points per game, which is 11.7 points higher than her career average entering the season. The Coppell, Texas, native was electric in last week's action, averaging 25.7 points in the three games, including a 30-point performance against Yale.
The Houston freshmen have begun to step up in recent games, led by forward Terran Alford, who averaged 5.7 points and 12.0 rebounds a week ago. Alford kicked off the week by snagging a school-record tying 20 rebounds against Oral Roberts, and followed up with her first-career double-double against Yale (12 points, 11 rebounds), becoming the first Houston freshman to achieve the feat since Courtney Taylor on Feb. 23, 2008.
Danielle Parks enjoyed a breakout game against McNeese State on Saturday, pouring on 16 points, highlighted by a 3-of-5 effort from 3-point range, while fellow freshman Mileka Loydrake returned to the point guard position after missing the previous four games and posted eight points and a game-high seven assists.
ABOUT TCU
The Horned Frogs travel to Houston with a 2-4 overall record, posting wins over UTSA and Fordham. TCU returns only two starters from last season's 22-11 squad, and received a huge blow when junior forward Starr Crawford (12.0 ppg, 9.7 rpg) was lost to injury prior to the season.
Like Houston, TCU has struggled to generate points this season, averaging just 58.3 points per contest. The Frogs have played stellar defense, however, limiting opponents to 59.3 points per game and 31.5 percent shooting from the field.
Freshman guard Natalie Ventress leads the Frogs with 11.3 points, while senior guard Antoinette Thompson is also scoring in double figures with 11.0 points per contest.
SERIES HISTORY
Houston and TCU will renew its rivalry for the 35th time in a series dating back to the 1982-83 season. The Cougars hold a 22-12 advantage in the series and have topped the Horned Frogs in 17 of 20 contests played at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The two teams have a long history, playing against each other as members of both the Southwest Conference and Conference USA. From 1983-96, the Cougars posted a 23-4 record against the Frogs in SWC play, while edging TCU by a 5-4 margin in C-USA action from 2002-05.
During the 2003-04 season, the two teams met twice while being ranked in the top 20, as Houston defeated TCU at home to clinch the C-USA regular season title and topped the Frogs once more in Fort Worth to claim the C-USA Tournament championship.
TCU won its second-straight contest against Houston last season in Fort Worth by a score of 69-57. The Cougars couldn't overcome a dismal shooting effort in which they shot just 26 percent from the field. Courtney Taylor posted a double-double (13 points, 14 rebounds) in the loss, while Porsche Landry and Roxana Button also scored in double figures with 13 and 12 points, respectively.
UP NEXT
After hosting TCU in the Cougars' fourth-straight home game, Houston takes to the road to face UTSA on Sunday before returning home to face Louisiana Tech (Dec. 7) and Houston Baptist (Dec. 10).
