Taylor Powers Houston Past Tulane, 85-70

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Courtney Taylor posted 21 points and 18 rebounds as the University of Houston women's basketball team topped Tulane by a score of 85-70, Sunday afternoon at Fogelman Arena in New Orleans, La. The Cougars improved to 18-4 overall and remained undefeated in Conference USA with a 9-0 mark.
Taylor was 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line with three steals, two assists and two blocks in 30 minutes of action. The Crockett, Texas, native registered her 15th double-double of the season and 55th of her career.
Porsche Landry led three other Cougars in double figures with 20 points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals. The Houston native shot 7-of-15 from the field and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Brittney Scott tallied 19 points and three assists, going 6-of-13 from the field and accounting for all three of Houston's 3-point buckets. Scott helped carry the Cougars in the first half with 14 points off of 5-of-8 shooting from the field, including a 3-of-6 effort from long range.
Lesslee Mason came up huge for the Cougars down the stretch, scoring 10 of her 12 points in the second half after only playing seven of the first 20 minutes due to early foul trouble.
Brittany Mason just missed scoring in double figures for the second-straight game with eight points to go with five boards, two assists and two steals.
The Cougars shot a scorching 53 percent (16-of-30) from the field in the first half and held a 45-30 lead at the break.
Houston trailed 14-13 at the 12:35 mark of the first half before mounting a 17-6 run to go up by 10 with 6:50 remaining. The Green Wave cut the deficit down to seven before the Cougars ended the half on a 10-2 run, powered by six-consecutive points from Scott.
The Cougars held a 16-point lead when Brittany Mason went coast-to-coast for the layup with 13:28 left to play, but Tulane stormed back with a 19-7 run to cut the margin down to four with 6:09 remaining.
Houston answered with a pivotal 6-0 run to push the lead back to double digits and held the Green Wave to only one field goal for the remainder of the game to close out the contest.
The Cougars shot 46 percent (30-of-66) from the field, 27 percent (3-of-11) from 3-point range and 79 percent (22-of-28) from the charity stripe.
Tulane shot a cold 36 percent (26-of-72) from the field and 15 percent (2-of-13) from downtown, while going 16-of-25 (64 percent) from the free-throw line.
Houston lost the rebound battle by a 47-45 margin, while forcing 22 turnovers on 13 steals.
Danielle Nunn led Tulane (17-6, 6-4) with 21 points and nine rebounds, while Brittany Lindsey added 16 points and nine boards.
The Cougars return home to play host to cross-town rival Rice at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday night at Hofheinz Pavilion.

*Houston won its fifth-consecutive contest against Tulane to improve to 11-17 all-time and 5-8 against the Green Wave in New Orleans.
*The Cougars increased its season record to 18-4, which marks the third-best start in school history.
*Courtney Taylor notched her 15th double-double of the season and 55th of her career, which is tops in Houston history and ranks fourth all-time in C-USA history.
*Taylor knocked down eight field goals to move into fifth place all-time at Houston (583), while swatting two shots to jump into third place in Houston history (123).
*Brittney Scott made her 83rd consecutive start on Sunday, dating back to the start of the 2008-09 season.
