HOUSTON - The University of Houston soccer coaching staff announced the 2011 summer camp Wednesday afternoon.
Susan Bush, 2010 Conference USA Coach of the Year, and assistant coaches Eric Quill and Jenna Huff, will instruct campers of all ages and skillsets in the fundamentals and advanced techniques of soccer.
This summer, campers will have the option to train indoors or outdoors. The first two camp sessions "Beat the Heat" will take place inside the University of Houston Alumni/Athletics Center. The full day camp is designed for campers between the ages of 9-18 while the Cougar Cubs Camp will cater to the 4-8 year-old age range. Inside the Athletics Center, campers will train in small-sided games and cover topics such as attacking, defending, passing, heading and other fundamental work.
Two sessions (June 6-9 and June 27-30) will be offered for both indoor training camps.
A goalkeeper/striker camp will follow the indoor training camps. The curriculum for the strikers includes a variety of attacking topics including one-one-one technique, creating runs, ball striking and surface finishing. Goalkeepers will encounter topics like shot stopping, saving the breakaway, the importance of footwork and ball handling, defending the service and controlling the box. The campers will have a chance to test what they have learned as the camp culminates in a controlled game focusing on shooting for the striker and facing the shot for the goalkeeper.
The final camps will be for the most advanced and savvy soccer athletes to become the best player they can be.
The Elite Residential Camp will train players in high level tactics and techniques specific to their ages and abilities. A balance of enthusiasm and intensity will be present in every training environment.
The UH Elite College Prep Camp is for campers of the age where college soccer is on their immediate horizon. Players between the ages of 14-18 will be instructed by a decorated collegiate coaching staff who want to get a head start on understanding the recruiting process and what to expect as a college athlete. Classroom sessions that cover recruiting information, college preparation and question/answer sessions to address what a player needs to do in order to be successful at the collegiate level. In addition to the classroom work, heavy emphasis will be placed on field work with fitness training, tactical work, competition and high-paced scrimmages concluding each training session. The campers will conclude the nights in the dorms like a collegiate student-athlete.
The 2010 Houston Cougars finished the season 12-5-4, the best record in program history. Forward Lauri Byrne and midfielder Katelyn Rhodes were named to the All-Conference USA First Team while defender Danielle Munoz and Cami Koski were All-Second Team selections. Four All-Conference selections was the second most among the league. Three freshman (Koski, Munoz and Jasmine Martinez) were selected to the All-Freshman squad, the most among any conference schools.
