HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team and head coach Molly Alvey announced Tuesday the hiring of Karlis Dunens as an assistant coach.
"I am so incredibly excited to bring Karlis into our program," Alvey said. "He brings a proven record of winning and that's what we are here to do - win. His expertise in video and scouting software is going to help take us to the next level and with our training it is an added bonus to have a Houston native who is excited about being back in Texas."
Dunens comes to Houston after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Jacksonville State. Last season, he helped guide the Gamecocks to a 27-8 record and a berth in the NCAA Championships. Jacksonville State claimed the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and five members of the squad earned postseaon honors.
His duties at Jacksonville State included planning and running drills, serving as the team video coordinator, creating information for recruits and evaluating potential student-athletes. During game days, Dunens served as a game day coordinator, where he organized match officials, stat crew and helped develop marketing plans.
During his two seasons with the Gamecocks, Dunens also planned and organized the program's volleyball camps.
Prior to Jacksonville State, Dunens was a manager and volunteer assistant coach at Texas A&M from 2006-2008. With the Aggies, he assisted with drills during practice and was in charge of the team and scouting videos.
Dunens played volleyball as a member of the Texas A&M club team, before serving as the coach from 2006-2008. In addition, he was the women's volleyball club coach from 2003-2005.
Dunens is a native of Houston where he attended Klein High school. He joins assistant coach Nicole Miller, who joined the staff in February, as members of the UH volleyball staff. They will be under the direction of head coach Molly Alvey, who was hired in January.
