IRVING, Texas -- University of Houston Shelby Scott, who completed her eligibility in the fall after a standout four-year career with the Cougar soccer team, was named a recipient of the Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship Award, Conference USA Commissioner Britton Banowky announced Friday.
C-USA annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
A former goalkeeper, Scott exited the UH soccer program as the all-time leader in wins (20), shutouts (14) and saves (304). Last season, she set the school record for cleansheets in a season with six and set a personal season best with a 1.26 goals against average, which ranks fourth all-time.
In addition, Scott excelled in the classroom where she was a four-time winner of the C-USA Academic Medal and was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 First Team in 2007 and 2008.
This is the first year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November.
