HOUSTON -The University of Houston women's basketball team got 22 points from junior guard Brittney Scott and a career-high 11 points from junior forward Brittany Mason, but it was not enough to pull the upset Tuesday night as the Cougars fell to No. 21 Kansas at Hofheinz Pavilion.
"A game like this exposes a lot of things," head coach Joe Curl said. "We play a tough schedule for exactly that reason - we hope we don't get exposed that badly though. It is all about the little things. Everyone runs offenses, defenses, out of bounds plays, presses. It's the team that does the little things that will have success."
Scott's shooting night saw her go 7-of-13 from the field, including four baskets from 3-point range and add four rebounds and three assists. For her part, Mason came close to her second career double-double by finishing with 11 points and eight rebounds. The Houston native's previous career high was 10, which she set on a pair of occasions last season.
Joining the duo in double figures were junior forward Courtney Taylor, who chipped in 16 points and six rebounds after leaving the last game with an injury, and junior guard Jasmine Johnson with 14 points.
Kansas, which shot a blistering 63.9 percent from the floor, got a career-best 37 points from senior Danielle McCray. The Olathe, Kan., came out on fire, making her first seven shots from the floor on her way to a 17-for-22 shooting night for the Jayhawks, who improved to 9-2 on the season.
The Cougars, who trailed at the break, 46-31, made 26-of-61 shots from the floor for a 42.6 team shooting percentage in the game but dropped their second straight contest to fall to 6-5 on the season.
