HOUSTON - Coming off a 13-day break since its last game which came on the heels of a hectic month of November, the University of Houston women's basketball team will kickoff a two-game home stand on Sunday when it hosts Princeton in a 1 p.m. contest at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars are riding a three-game winning streak entering the bout with Princeton, a streak that included an offensive explosion in their last home outing when they defeated North Texas 104-65. The scoring output marked the 35th time in program history that UH has topped the century mark and the first since a 106-54 win over Sam Houston State on Dec. 1, 2002.
Sophomore point guard Porsche Landry has found her groove in recent weeks, dishing out 22 assists in her last three games for an average of 7.3 per contest.
Many of Landry's assists have ended with a basket from junior guard Brittney Scott, who has been on a roll offensively for the Cougars. The Orange, Texas, native enters the weekend leading the team in scoring at 15.6 points per game and is riding a hot streak that began with a career-high, 32-point outburst against North Texas.
Courtney Taylor continued her quest to become Houston's leader in career double-doubles as she collected her 29th such performance with a game-high 18-point, 10-rebound effort against UTSA on Dec. 7. The junior forward from Crockett, Texas, now ranks in a tie for second place on the UH career list with Darla Simpson (1988-92), just six behind all-time leader Sancho Lyttle, who tallied 35 double-doubles from 2002-04.
In addition to the double-double career record, Taylor is also creeping up on another piece of Houston women's basketball history - the 1,000 point scorers club. Entering the Princeton game, Taylor has scored 900 points in 67 games in a Cougar uniform.
The Tigers come to the Bayou City with a 10-2 record under third-year head coach Courtney Banghart. Freshman Niveen Rasheed has been solid in her rookie campaign, leading Princeton in scoring at 17.7 points per game and in rebounding with an average of 7.2 per contest.
Sunday's meeting will be the first between Houston and Princeton in women's basketball.
Any fan that brings a new toy to the Princeton game will receive a half price general admission ticket. All donated toys will be delivered to the House of Tiny Treasures on Monday, Dec. 21st, by the Houston women's basketball team.
